What number of Jamie's lends itself to back-up dancers?

'Moving too fast' maybe??
I wondered about the earphones too - bit odd!

The picture and article have painted me skeptical about this movie. A group production number on the streets of NYC? Ugh.

I dunno, if they're choreographing this ensemble number the way that I think they are (like it's all in Jamie's head), it could work.
I don't think he would be wearing a suit during "Moving Too Fast." That seems like a number later when he's more successful. Possibly some part of "A Miracle Would Happen."
That group number makes me dubious as well.

I know this is just based on a few selected photos, but does anyone else feel like they're trying to style this like the "You Make my Dreams Come True" number from (500) Days of Summer?

Shouldn't they be on a boat for the proposal?

I'm pleasantly surprised.

I wonder who orchestrated this. Sad to hear the chamber feeling is gone, but I should have figured they would add auto-tune and rock drums. It has a pop sound now.

Sorry to hear that. I should have downloaded them to my computer but, honestly, the quality was terrible. It was obvious that someone was on set (outside) and secretly recording the playback for filming... from a very far distance.
I'm sure they'll release audio teasers soon enough. From what I heard, the string and piano parts were staying mostly true to the original orchestrations but there was a lot more guitar in the up-tempos and, even more prominently, drums. More specifically, a pop/rock drum kit.
I'm sure it's something I'll get used to. I will miss that chamber sound, though.

I would imagine this and many other things will be changed in the movie - which is not a bad thing in my opinion. They need to make it more visually appealing for it to work as a movie (although I have only seen the youtubes of the original production not the recent one)

Jason Robert Brown seems to be still very involved, not sure if he is still doing the orchestration though but he certainly seems very involved. The quality of the recording wasn't great but I thought they sounded really really good!

"Didn't notice a huge difference myself"
I would suggest that the prominent addition of a rock drum kit is a "huge difference" from the original, chamber-style orchestrations that featured only some light percussion in a couple of the songs.

Brown has always called himself a pop-rock songwriter in theatrical clothing, and suggested that pianists use his sheet music as a template to improvise and groove on. It doesn't shock me at all that he would open up his sound to a larger and less "theatrical" orchestration for the movie- it's in keeping with his personality anyway.

A bigger sound means potentially bigger success. Unfortunately the general filmgoing public know musicals only as roaring entertainment. It's also a question of size- an intimate feel works on the stage but may look swamped on the big screen.

According to this 'as in Les Miserables, the stars of The Last Five Years sing live and wear earpieces to hear the music.'
