"I wrote a book: "How to Be Popular". Now I've put together a top ten list of how to help you:
-Elphie, everyday... shower. I mean, who knows? Maybe some of that green is gonna come off!
-Deodorant Elphie. No body likes a stinky witch!
-I think we've covered the hair, we'll get to that.
-Clean underclothes. That's all I'm gonna say.
-Look at your posture. That's no way to be popular!
-Bed made, room straightened. We've done that.
-Colors blended. Oookay.
-But the most important thing to have, to make yourself popular, is to keep your beautiful smile."
~Kristin Chenoweth in her last performance of the song "Popular"
uhm, i know this is the unpopular opinion but i think Lea's voice is kinda thin and boring... its pretty but nothing special, and I definitely definitely prefer daphne's meatier version to that thin, standard... blah.
i didnt get to see daphne live and im completely amenable to the fact that she was likely miscast..
but i just dont understand what everyone likes about Lea's voice. I seriously like Daphne's rougher sound way better.
I'm still praying for my Les Mis tix for my birthday.
"One day, is that enough for you, one day he went dumb, one day I went blind, one day we'll go deaf, one day we were born, one day we shall die, the same day, the same second, is that enough for you? They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more." --Waiting for Godot
That was sung before rehearsals so, it would still go through some changes come mid-February. That's official, for sure. It would still be signature Salonga but, the song will be sung with more chest voice and would be grittier once blocking is added to it.
"I love acting. It is so much more real than life." Oscar Wilde "After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." Aldous Huxley
I LOVE Lea's voice! It's just so pure, clean and sweet. I love Daphne's too, very edgy and rock. But you NOT compare the two as they do such different roles though it's VERY interesting to know they both ended up doing the same role! I think Lea's more suited to play Fantine than Eponine to be honest though Ruthie will ALWAYS FOR EVER ETERNALLY be Fantine in my heart! :P I DO hope Broadway.com/BroadwayBeat would have an opening video of Lea in Les Mis!
*off topic: can't wait to see Lea as Cinderella! She's SO made for the role! If Paolo's Prince Charming, I'd DIE!*

I am LOVING the Daphne love on this board :) It's about time! Lea sounds beautiful, but very by the book. Where are the tears? Where's the depth? That's alllll Daphne.
Lea's voice is beautiful and emotional, and that is what makes it special. I like her version of the song, and I did think she did a little acting in it. She should get even stronger. I hope she records this song for her next CD, since there will probably not be a revival cast recording.
OK just when I thought I was understanding these boards you all go an d throw me a 180. When Les Miz opened the only thing on these boards was "oh my, Daphne sucks" for the LONGEST time. Granted she isn't my top choice for the role, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and even though I haven't seen her, I bet she is amazing in that role. A little streetwise. And now a video of Lea singing and a majority of you are bashing her, and this wasn't even in show context, this was just on a talk show. I think that Fantine needs to be more gritier, like Daphne, because she gets drawn into this world of prostitution, but I think that Lea shows that while she is getting drawn into this world of prostitution there is still a vulnerable woman underneath. I know I probably will never be able to see her perform, but I bet she will be amazing once she gets into costume and character. And I am sure that Daphne is continuing to be amazing too. I think they will both make Fantine a memorable role, but they are making the character their own. Isn't that supposed to be the whole idea of acting, creating a character that works for you? Bravo to both actresses I love you both!!!!
that girl could do no wrong. she hit it out of the ball park. grand slam, baby! and i *know* she's going to be even more amazing when she hits the broadhurst stage in march.
daphne, who?
lol

"Yes beautiful, but its nothing special. At least Daphne's version was original."
Ok, well now that others have said it its going to look like I'm just jumping on the bandwagon, but my original thought was that it is beautiful . . . but . . . where is the emotion?! Ok, she shows some on her face, but not in her voice. And I realize this is before rehearsals, but still. I really like Daphne's version better. Glad I'm not the only one who missed her grittiness and emotion. Lea's version may be prettier, but Daphne's is more real and certainly more original!
