Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Failing a fire inspection doesn't happen when actual professionals are involved and their expertise listened to.

^ 100%

This has a decent score so it's a real shame this is happening, but completely expected considering the guy in charge.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

I cannot personally recall an instance of a production being delayed because they did not pass a fire inspection due to design issues. That is a wacky thing.

So this show is starting out even deeper in the hole then lol.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I mean, tell that to my friend in the show whose checks are clearing. The cast would be performing if it weren’t for the delays, so their salaries were probably already built in the budget for part of it.

As for the fire inspection, yeah, that happened on Monday, which cause the previews to be scuttled to the new start date.

I’m starting to think that this show is going to be too big for a theatre of this size, but Todrick’s reputation forced his hand into a smaller commercial run as a proving ground instead of a cold open on Broadway.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Regardless of his reputation for failing to pay dancers for his own projects in the past, this is a different situation for Todrick. The fact it's a union production is a major factor, as is the fact that he clearly wants to be seen as legitimate in NYC. I doubt he will be after this, but not because he's not paying people- it's because he refuses to be reigned in and doesn't seem to want to delegate or compromise enough. So we have Todrick starring in, writing, composing, directing, and choreographing a production that can't even start performances because of issues that typically don't arise when there are firmer hands at the wheel.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Leaders who need control, don't compromise, crave attention, are quick to villainize critics, and must make everything all about themselves? Why does this keep happening in our country?!?!?! Hope the folks involved with the show don't google the traits of malignant narcissism...

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

The show had two workshop runs at Sadler's Wells East which is primarily a dance theatre that seats 550 and has about 3,800 sq ft of convertible stage space. The Daryl Roth seats 300 and advertises itself as a convertible performance space of 3,600 sq ft. At face value you can see why they booked the theatre.

What is not readily apparent is that the Roth's 3,600 sq ft includes the seating space for the audience which makes the playing space 900 to 1200 sq ft. Fitting a production that was designed for 3800 sq ft into 1200 sq ft is an extraordinary challenge and one that definitely would have taken the time period of the cancelled shows and definitely would have involved the fire marshall since the Roth is zoned as one single space with no defined stage/audience areas.

These are all facts easily discovered by a Google search. I suppose being cruel and attacking individuals is always easier and a better use of one's time. In any case, they just posted production photos that look stunning which means they figured out a way to make it work. I have my tickets and am looking forward to seeing it next month.

The explanation you just gave is not some saving face for Todrick, you're right this is all easily researchable which makes it very confusing why it wasn't before Todrick signed contracts for fhis Theatre... you're just explaining why he looks stupid instead of making him not look stupid.

Also, they're starting performances tonight (allegedly) and there's still carpentry wood strewn about outside the theatre this morning so... good luck to them I hope!

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Yeah, suggesting that the production was simply transplanted into a different space without the differences being accounted for is not exactly a support for Todrick’s case.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Obviously, someone (or more) on the production team is at fault here but as I see it, that's between them and their higher power. None of my business and not for me to judge. If you interpret my post as a sign of support for someone I never even named in my post, that's your interpretation. It does not make it true.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Knowing how and when to delegate is among the most important skills for a director. Or, for that matter, for a creative looking to have their art realized.

Well no, we were all talking about one person and then you wrote that post admonishing us about criticizing that one person. That's literally just what you did, not an interpretation.

As for the "Someone" responsible I would again have to place that at the feet of Composer, Author, Director, Choreographer, Star, Lead Producer, and above the title caterer Todrick Hall. You take on every role that should be going to people with more qualifications than you then expect to be the one called out when your inexperience inevitably shows itself.

MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

The cast will elevate the show. There is no way they can't. There are excellent singers in this show. That is what it will ride on - excellent NYC singers doing what they do- making the show better than it is. The singing in the UK glossed over the obvious issues then - and suspect the same in nyc.

Is this a period piece or not? A sports jersey as merch seems strange if it is.

the clips on social media of the cast singing some of the songs do seem really good, I wouldn’t mind catching this but I won’t be able to. Hopefully they will have a cast recording.

Jerseys were in vogue this year thanks to the Jellicle Ball and Titanique, so they probably wanted in on that trend.

Jerseys are trendy - and in most fast fashion stores right now (Old Navy to H&M). Cheap to produce.

MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

I have very little context for the material, but have to ask after looking at the production photos - is there really an evil stepmother/sisters plotline? I can’t help but notice his influence in those three characters and their costuming/grouping.

Lolz. Jerseys were all over New York and Paris Fashion Week in January and February, curated and planned long before both flops premiered. Those shows have zero to do with fashion trends worldwide for Fall.

I was at the first preview (comp). The choreography is absolutely stunning. Everything else is quite messy and did not work for me. This is a big, big show that is very expensive. I know he is trying to raise money to take this to Broadway, but I just don't see how this could recoup ever unless Todricks replaces himself with a star which he will never do. Meh.
