Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Mr. Hall has been bragging the show is filling up on socials this week "because of you". Stating he has spent no money on advertising. He has been papering a good portion of the house each night with free advertising: vlogers, Tik-Tokers and influencers.

A young black woman's' perspective, gaining positive response. She found the show to be black trauma and a rehash of Slave play.

Right Right Right...

He's not spending any money at advertising because he does not have any money to spend on advertising. So why not use those empty seats from lack of advertising to get comped influencers to do it for free? Doesn't appear to actually be working, but congrats on another scam Toddy.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

It's quite something watching influencers who keep posting about boycotting Scott Rudin productions while cheering on this guy, accused of sexual harassment, wage theft and workplace bullying.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Seeing some backlash about this on Twitter. Is it really about a slave “falling in love” with their master or master’s husband?

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Mr. Hall attempts to combat, and silence (even with calculated flattery of her appearce) ONE of the negative Tik-Tok reviews (there are more) in a semi-manic & defensive video. A follow up from the reviewer follows.

  • uhhh. this is being produced by Mr. Hall, his manager & Scooter Braun (who Taylor Swift publicly called a "calculated bully" alleging she was blocked from buying her own masters. The dispute sparked a massive industry debate over artist ownership and led Swift to begin re-recording her back catalog. Around his transition to HYBE, several high-profile clients—including Justin Beiber, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato—parted ways with him amid reports of backstage and personal-crisis tensions.) ?

Good try. Hardly - didn't know who he was until his connection to Burlesque came about over the pond - Finding a lot out now. Wow. I had high hopes for the show. seems a liability.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

How anyone watches his video response to the very reasoned, rational and polite TikTok review and not thinks he is a raging egomaniac and unstable is beyond me. This guy is clearly not good people. Why do folks continue to fawn over him?

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

A young black man interviews TH and responds to the show. His issues and concerns... It's not his first time...

MEDIUM - "I Interviewed Todrick Hall in 2018. Midnight Made Me Realize We’re Still Having the Same Conversation."

"Eight years after our conversation about reverse racism, structural power and "Forbidden", Hall’s new slavery musical returns to the same thought experiment on a much bigger stage."

"I had also seen how enthusiastically the show had been received by some of Todrick’s fans overseas, and my immediate thought was that bringing this particular story to the United States was going to be the real test. American audiences, and Black American audiences in particular, are going to bring a very different historical relationship to this material."

"The score also lives at a very high level of intensity for a very long time. The cast can sing, and I mean really sing, but there comes a point where another huge riff stops feeling like an event because the previous five people also gave you huge riffs. Emotional contrast matters. If everything is a climax, the climax has less room to climb. By the second act, there were moments when I found myself appreciating the technical ability while feeling strangely detached from what the song was supposed to be doing dramatically."

" I left the theater feeling that the very device he uses to create empathy also limits how deeply the show can deal with the history it invokes. Swapping the bodies makes for striking theater. It does not .. swap the meaning of power."

MEDIUM - Full interview / review.

OF COURSE Todrick is taking the brunt of the blame for it! If the writer, director, star, and lead producer courts a bunch of rich, white people to fund his vanity project, the blame for that project being bad rests on the creator and person who wrangled together the funds. I know it’s easier to spread the blame around, but this show doesn’t exist without Todrick and Todrick alone. If it’s bad/offensive, that’s his to answer for.

I’m all for placing blame at the feet of clueless white people who should (theoretically) know better. But they didn’t write this show or even bring it to New York: Todrick did.

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Seeing a lot more discourse online, and videos from Black creators, sharing their feelings on the actual story being told, and how it's problematic, and triggering. This is going to be a divisive one.

That one girl was "triggered" by Appropriate and thus thinks it's "problematic"?

Oh, FFS. I'm sure this show sucks on its own merits but the artistically-challenged triggerati seem to think everything must have corner protectors for baby safety.

These are the same people who thought Shipoopi was "problematic".

Re: MIDNIGHT (Off-Broadway)

Now I haven't seen the show, but I've seen some contrarians try to say that

Click Here To Toggle Spoiler Content

Richard isn't Rail's Master. However, what I've gathered is that Rail was going to be killed for disobedience had Richard not stepped in and offered to take him in. The show may not say it, but one would assume that comes with the exchange of money. And everyone around Richard would see him as Rail's Master. And I would assume Richard is not paying Rail for his work. So all of this is to say... that's still absolutely a Master/Slave relationship.

1 MINUTE CRITIC - Positive

Todrick Hall’s ‘Midnight’ turns a forbidden writing lesson into a love story

The voices are powerful, and by the end, theatergoers will wonder whether they could live someone else’s life. Although the show is set in the 1800s and centers on racism and homophobia, both remain sources of contention today. The music will keep you in your seat, but the message, especially so close to a monumental midterm election, will challenge your heart and mind.

Midnight’ Review: Todrick Hall’s Musical Takes a Daring Detour Into Alternate History

Hall’s euphorically maximalist musical is undeniably queer in its overabundance.

Hall’s choice of chattel slavery as a backdrop creates an uneasy context for the show’s promotion of equal, empathetic partnerships across racial lines in the present day. In allegorizing contemporary race relations and their intersections with queerness, Midnight situates itself in that historical moment presumably because its tropes are so familiar—and thus so ripe for subversion. But treating slavery as a fairy-tale metaphor, especially when the show stages murders, beatings, and family separations, ventures into treacherous territory. Any sense of self-aware subversion takes a long time to emerge.

Exploring those tensions and discomforts also seems to be part of the point. If Midnight has one major problem to address, it’s Hall’s eagerness to bundle up the show’s message after raising complex questions about how we perceive race in performance and, by extension, in our lives.

NY THEATER GUIDE - MIXED / NEGATIVE

'Midnight' Off-Broadway review — Todrick Hall's new musical goes big

https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/midnight-off-broadway-review-todrick-hall

But put together in context, these components create a strange, complex experience that’s not exactly unenjoyable, but somewhat dubious. Hall, doing sextuple duty as director, choreographer, book writer, composer, lyricist, and star, has developed a show that’s equal parts Hamilton, Cinderella, Brokeback Mountain, Porgy and Bess, and The Color Purple to bizarre effect. On the one hand, the story of a doomed, clandestine queer relationship between a Black slave named Rail (Hall) and the wealthy white Richard (Jeremy Beloate), the son of the family who owns Rail, is certainly intriguing, even if we are not exactly short on stories of the exploitation and oppression of Black and queer people. There are minor ways in which Hall seems able to interrogate the social dynamics at play.

Midnight is surely entertaining: The cast feels gloriously unified while also giving actors like Charlotte Odusanya, Bella Coppola, Ayana George, Kennedy Caughell, and Kolbi Jordan standout vocal moments of their own. The choreography is dynamic and creates fine stage imagery, and the score has multiple earworms. But one can’t help but wonder if Midnight is also indebted to the age of the megamusical, when spectacle mattered more than a meaningful relationship between the subject matter and the style in which it's delivered. Does Miss Saigon really need that gigantic helicopter to convey the impossibility of love in a fruitless, tragic war? Does Midnight really need clubby strobe lights while Rail gets beaten on a plantation? Probably not
