Hi all! My friend and I are going to be in NYC for a day or two in April and we were wanting to go to Marie's Crisis for a bit as we are both big fans of musicals and have always wanted to visit the bar. We are both 18, but if neither of us tries to order any alcohol, will we still be denied entrance? I'm not sure what the law is, but I've walked into a few (small) bars at home in Chicago and as long as we didn't try to order they didn't say anything to us. Is it different in NYC? Thanks!

They usually check IDs at the door, especially on weekends.

My thought is that if they check ID's at all then you have your answer.

Plus, you just gave away the day and time you are going to be there. In a public forum. For all you know, employees or patrons of the bar could be reading this!

I believe the LAW says its ok to be in the establishment but not be served, but the venue cant set their own standards.

Why not just call and ask them???

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Things may have changed but when I was a college student back in the early 2000s my friends and I (all over 18 but under 21) were able to get in at Marie's Crisis without fake ids. We just drank soda and back then the waitress (I forget her name but she was a staple there) all she cared for was her tip and making sure we always had a non-alcoholic drink on our hands. So if you don't have much cash, either drink very slowly or just go there once you do have cash.

Good luck! Probably better for someone aged 18-20 who have gone recently to answer your question.

For what its worth, Ive been there before. A friend of mine goes there every Monday and I often go with her. Now, Im 29 so any issue that involves being underage is not one that impacts me at all of course. But, that said, there was no one carding outside as is common for many bars.

However, I did pass it one Saturday night after getting out of a performance of Sweeney Todd at the Barrow Street and noticed that there was a guy outside checking IDs before you entered.

My overall experience is that many bars have someone outside checking IDs before entry but generally only on the weekends when its more crowded. If its during the week and it isnt crowded then sometimes the bar tender checks before serving you but thats only if they think you seem to young to be there.

AS you probably know the legal drinking age is 21 in NYC. You are under age to be in a bar even if you don't drink. Marie's is tricky as they usually don't have someone at the door during the week but the weekends are crazy crowded and people line up to get in....very rare during the week and the earlier you go after they open less people and you just walk in. But don't just gawk and hang...get a juice or soda when they ask what you would like! So take your chance...and tip in the jar and after you order a drink(s)!

I believe that the loophole is if the pub or tavern also serves food, then children may enter the establishment.

Order many drinks (soda?), tip the waitstaff, bartender and piano player VERY well and you will be fine. Don't be cheap, they won't like you or want you back. People either love or hate this place.

If they're carding, just be honest. "We'r'e seventeen but we're not here to drink. We just want the piano bar experience." Of course it's against the law to admit you so if they won't, no hard feelings.

If they are carding, and under 21 isn't supposed to be there, I doubt they would knowingly allow them to do so.

I think Don't Tell Mamma's allows under 21 - as they serve food.

Yup I heard that too. They're 18 and thus are considered adults but can't drink alcohol. Like what others have said, just depends on whether there is a doorman there or not.

I bought a fake to go there and I was only idd on Saturday night. When I went on weekdays it was never checked.

You can try it, but I highly suspect they may ask you to leave. Even if just ordering a soda. It's not about being mean or non empathetic, but if an inspector happened to be in the bar that night and discovered underage persons inside, they could get their license taken away. The odds of said inspector being there on the same night you attend are probably low, but its quite understandable for them to not want to risk their business.

I believe the above poster is correct that Don't Tell Mama (46th btwn 8 & 9) does allow underage patrons because its a restaurant. You just cant order alcohol. Definitely a different vibe from Marie's Crisis, but can still be lots of fun and will give you a piano bar/cabaret environment that you seek.

It's too bad the weather is so crappy. If it were summer, you could at least stand outside near Duplex and listen to the songs as they spill through the open patio doors/windows haha.
