There are some theatre songs that make me want to rip my hair out every time I hear them. I think my top 5 are:
Magic To Do
Someone Like You
Any Dream Will Do
They Don't Know
The Sound Of Music

Oh, there are SO many but the first two that come to mind are:
KING OF THE WORLD from Songs for a New World
and
THE RIDDLE SONG from Floyd Collins (and Sondheim wishes he had written this one! Oy!)
Sweet Jesus on a scooter, they have to be among the most self-indulgent and annoying songs ever!

-Mama I'm A Big Girl Now- Hairspray (shut up, shut up, shut up)
-Baltimore Crabs- Hairspray
-We Go Together- Grease (someone had a serious brain fart when
they wrote this song)
-Music of the Night- Phantom (might have liked it at one time,
can't remember)
-Most of the crap from Joseph
-Love a lot of Lippa's melodies but the man needs a lyricist
(the Lyrics in John and Jen suck)
-Extraordinary from Pippin (Sesame Street)
-Dancing Queen from Mamma Mia
-Another Pyramid from Aida
...I'm sure there are many others but I don't usually listen to songs that I can't stand and block them out of my mind.

Posted: 11/1/03 at 6:16pmI'm not a HUGE Hairspray fan - haven't seen the show, just heard the score. I DO like it a lot - especially Good Morning Baltimore and Run & Tell That. I can see how pretty much all of the songs could get on someone's nerves.

No one would consider "A Boy Like That" to be annoying if they'd attended on of the magnificent Patti LuPone's COULDA, WOULDA, SHOULDA concerts. In this program, the glorious Ms LuPone sings BOTH parts of "A Boy Like That" complete with Hispanic accents and different body language for each of the characters. It becomes the hilarious highlight of the the concert.
I love Patti LuPone!

thank you DollyPop :)
just that one song made me NEVER want to see the show because i knew i'd have to hear it again! i'm sure they lost other people too. what was the point of having a cast recording since it seems like they only had a single?
and some songs from hairspray do annoy me. sorry, but not a big fan of marissa's voice. i like the current Tracy a bit better.

I'm surprised to see so many negative comments about songs in Hairspray. Last year Hairspray was God-given, the most glorious theatrical product anyone had ever seen. I didn't react that way..it was colorful and high energy, Harvey was annoying (popped me out of the storyline everytime he appeared), and the music was not in the least memorable. Based as it was on the music of a particular pop era, the originals from that era are infinitely more interesting (and it wasn't a particularly memorable time for music anyway!)
And now a question about the various lists people have posted: Did you hate those songs IMMEDIATELY upon hearing them, or is it simply repetition that causes you to dislike them?
