It was rather...strange seeing a blonde Roxie AND Velma. After seeing the movie...that was weird. Confused me a little bit.
Luba has got to be one of the most beautiful women I have EVER seen.
Is it true that this isn't the *real* production of Chicago? It was just supposed to be like a concert version of the show, but was so successful that they kept it on Broadway?
Did Mary already leave?

It was my second time seeing a show on broadway, i had seen the Producers earlier in the day (not with matt and nathan, 5 days after they left) and I just remember being in awe the whole time.
Yea, Mary left quickly.
I think Carole is leaving soon too.
I saw the show on a Sunday - the day of the BWW picnic.
Jul 30 or something...

I saw Wicked and Chicago on the same day. How ironic...kinda.
I saw Chitty on the same day as Chicago.
Yeah Parks, what you are seeing on Broadway now is the concert revival from the Encores series. It was such a success that they mounted the concert production as is to Broadway. The original Broadway version was in the early 1970's.
Yep. It was part of Encores concerts.
And at intermission of opening night there was already talks to bring it to Broadway, cause it was so damn good.
The Weissler's thought this would be perfect for them, because there is no set (less money to spend.) Insiders were suggesting to them they should really have a full set, but they decided to basically keep it as it is. And it's simply fantastic with a minor set and costumes.
The original Fosse version had a full scale set and costumes, but still had the dark feeling.

wel congratulations to the weisslers on (except for Grease) their only production to run for more than 2 year. Bully for them.
Ha!
I love it.
It reminds me of the minimal style of Cabaret as well.

parks, Ben Vereen is considered the heir to the Fosse dancing throne, if you will. He should be treated like a God because, in the dance world, he is one.
Lets not forget Chita Rivera for the ladies. She's our greatest tie to the golden age of Broadway of dance shows.
And Ann Reinking is the female heir to the Fosse dancing throne.

And that's why I'm surprised parks said that Vereen "wasn't that good." Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And I hate to bring up an old subject, but I would watch Ben Vereen poop if that's all he could do in Wicked.
I'm glad that it works so well without a set to showcase the dancing, but I wish there was a set and more elaborate costumes. I feel it could really enhance the piece and they would have a lot more oppurtunities as actors to respond to their surrondings.
^ Chicago??
Well the costumes are very sexy. Roxie's black lace costume is one of the sexiest costumes i've seen. period.
And who wouldn't enjoy women prancing around stage in bras and thongs, and shirtless men in tight leather pants? A little bit for everyoen.

Ben Vereen just didn't do anything for me.
He wasn't everything that people make him out to be in the show.

I've never seen Ben live, but I'm always amazed with his performances (Fosse & Pippin) that I've seen on DVD.
whatyouown - the show has a whole new meaning when it is stripped bare.
it might be the fact that they have no wish to see Christina Applegate butcher a classic.
Whatever. She was excellent.

Welcome to the party bway86, and only 8 hours late and with nothing new to add. If you couldn't tell, we sort of already moved on from the original point of this thread.
Just for the record, you may be upset about not getting to see Charity twice, but don't knock the music in Wicked just because you want to see a different show. I think you're taking your anger out in the wrong place. I don't think the music is simply pop songs, I think it's more than that, but don't be closed minded just because you're having a disagreement with your family.
i happen to think shwartz is a great composer, and i loved him WAAAYY before wicked. in fact, his name on the credits was the reason i went to see the show in the first place.
i heard this acting proff say once that a show is great as long as people are willing to see it. in that sense, wicked is a lot like cats and les miz and phantom. it's definetely on its way to becoming a classic - not necessarily because the material is amazing, but because of the love and hate reactions it gets from the public.
as for charity - i hope i get a chance to see applegate in the role. i'm interested in seeing how she does. and once she's gone...i REAAALLYYY hope bianca marroquin gets to play the part. she's got the perfect energy for it.
ilj, your parents are getting you a wonderful birthday present. you're lucky you have the means to go to see a hit broadway show in new york city with a family that loves you enough to endure musical theater for you. not all of us are as lucky. if seeing wicked honestly bothers you that much, tell them how you feel. i'm sure they'll understand and switch to see something else with you. if charity isn't family material, then chitty may be a good family-type revival to see.

I'm sorry, did you just put Les Mis on the same plane as Wicked and Cats? let's try that one again, only give Les Mis the respect it deserves. It has more than just popularity, it can be sustained on its merits.
and even if it couldn't...
the point is the audience is the one that chooses which one is a classic and which one isn't. the shows that have a good turnout earn money. the shows that earn money get revived. the shows that get revived become classics. etc.
and that is the state of the art.
This is truthfully still going on? o_O
You'll probably see Charity again, just be patient.
