Exactly what I wanted to hear. Classic musical theatre heaven.

How’s the tap number?

OK. Just walking in, so quick thoughts cuz I'm hungry.

The "Kermit" thing above. What I think you are trying to get at is Colton's affectation (is that the right word) when he sings and sounds VERY MUCH of the 1940's style, which is done perfectly, but that style I think you're wanting it to be something it's not. Or maybe not. I don't care, I thought he sounded very much of the time he was supposed to and loved it.

This is Stro at her absolute best. The tap number in Act One was one of my favorite things I've ever seen her direct. Visually STUNNING. The set/backdrops (projections) were exactly what you hope a Broadway show about New York City to be. If you're wondering where to sit for this one, I'd suggest front mezz to really take it all in.

The cast I found to be uniformly perfect with Anna giving an absolute star-turn. She's the real thing, y'all. And like I said before I adored Colton, too. Emily Skinner and the violin player (I'm so sorry I don't know his name or remember the characters name) were perfection and the song they share in her living room truly made me cry.

If I were to "critique" anything I'd say tonally act two is a bit different from act one and takes some time to get back into it but it's a pretty minor critique for a show that overall I can't believe they'd never done in front of an audience. The reaction they received tonight will have them all well-deservedly floating home on cloud 9.

Now I just wait to hear from everyone who hated it lol

The only comment on ATC suggests the show may be trying to tell too many stories.  Did you feel that way Jordan?

I can see that. But it's also trying to be a story about New York City which is a million different stories. Kinda how most movies etc about the city is. So while I don't entirely agree with it, it is a fair criticism.

That's Oliver Prose you're talking about, and he plays Alex Mann! He made his Broadway debut tonight, and also once did a 29-hour AEA reading of Kimberly Akimbo back in 2019.

Oh look, a bibu!

Well, tonight just changed all my Tony predictions. I smell a HIT.

A glorious night at the theatre. Stroman is doing some career best work here, Kander & Ebb's songs have never sounded better, the designs are SPECTACULAR, and Uzele and Ryan are giving star turns. It needs some trimming and tightening, but in a few weeks, it's going to be perfect. You can hear Lin's influence and it works seamlessly I have to say.

To me, this is what the modern take on a classic Broadway show should be. I loved Some Like it Hot, but this topped it completely IMHO. Some of the things happening onstage at the St. James have to be seen to be believed.

Go! You will have tears of joy.

Yeah. I said almost the exact same thing to my friend as we were walking out tonight. This just throws a total wrench into my predictions.

Is it solid enough to take home BEST MUSICAL over KIMBERLY ALIMBO?

Honestly, given Tony trends over the past years I don't think that would occur. That being said, NYNY is going to secure LOADS of nominations. I could see it winning scenic design, choreography, and maybe even orchestrations.

If anyone goes in expecting "Happy Endings" to be a showstopper, don't. All of 5 people on the planet care.

But if you go in wanting a big, splashy original, yet classic musical with heart and style, you will not be disappointed.

Echoing all of the above!! The scenic was everything I was hoping it would be. Anna Uzele truly gives a show stopping performance. She got a standing ovation for But The World Goes 'Round and I hope she does every night. I get the Kermit comparisons but I really loved Colton Ryan. His voice fits perfectly and makes you swoon. I also found Anna and Colton's chemistry to be pretty good, especially for a first preview.

The dancing is incredible (the tap number is so fun) and everyone is at the top of their game. I saw someone post about Happy Endings earlier and I thought that number was done super well! Not the biggest number but I thought the choreography and direction was brilliant for it.

I agree that we need more Emily Skinner. I also think the way they wrapped up Sofia Diaz's story could have had a bigger moment.

It could also be trimmed a bit. It never felt like it got slogged down but I do think it's just a tad too long.

Very excited to see this after previews and compare how it shapes up!! I've been waiting for a musical like this for so long. But I had a blast and a half with this show as is. I can see this snagging all the noms and I wouldn't be mad at Anna winning the Tony (in addition to scenic and choreography).

Yay. Happy endings for all!

Except for the trolls I suspect.

The Happy Endings sequence is something that is incredibly specific to film so they couldn't have really done it on stage. It's 11 minutes long with 3 to 4 set changes that happen in the blink of an eye. Yes it's stunning, but going in expecting that on stage would be ridiculous.

I'm happy to hear these mostly solid reviews. I don't have a dog in the fight but for some reason, I've really been rooting for this one to be good. Maybe because I just like the song New York, New York so damn much.

I think given some of the people I trust loved it I could take a flyer on a cheap seat for a good time. At worst I can resell this for what I paid. In terms of the set being great that is something that excites me. I do nyc theater for the difference in big production.

Re: Happy Endings

As long as they kept it in, I'm good. It contains some off Kander's best music. And Ebb's peerless lyrics.

By the way, what do YOU do? You won't believe it. Try me. I produce.

Also: you should be starred in a Broadway show.

Yes, I know.

They're IN. THE STARS. FOR MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

I guess I’ll be the first contrarian. The book is so weak that all the luster and production values are not enough to cover it. There is practically no plot interesting enough to follow. The show is just one bit production number after another, which is impressive and good, but then you remember that this is not a revue and should be a book musical. Some numbers do nothing to advance the plot.

I will agree that the two leads are truly great and giving it their all, but they have nothing to work with book-wise, there is no high stakes and the book barely touches on any true relationship or racial challenges, it’s almost laughable at how it doesn’t say anything about anything…

they need to cut that very last part ASAP

Very curious about the songs:

Beyond the four from the film, how many previously heard Kander and Ebb songs are included (I've heard that "I'm One of the Smart Ones," preserved on the album "Liza Minnelli at the Winter Garden," is in the show)?

Are there song credits in the Playbill that list exactly who wrote each song? (Kander and Ebb, or Kander and Miranda, or just Kander, etc.)

No offense but everyone screaming its praises are the ones always doing so.

Curious to hear more about the production.

I was not there tonight, but I could see it being the MJ to Kimberly Akimbo's Strange Loop, taking all the technical categories and ending up with a lot of wins, but being locked out of the top awards.
