I enjoy the orchestrations. But the broad dialects and forced enthusiasm are grating. It’s like listening to a bunch of British actors tryin’ ta TAWK loik Noi Yoikas.
The instrumental suites throughout made me tear up a bit, and a few of the new songs are likable. I clearly hear Lin’s influence in “Gold” and “Music, Money, Love”. Allison Blackwell has an operatic moment not unlike her Pretty Woman role. The orchestrations are lush, and the title song is obviously a highlight.
But besides all this, I can’t say I was impressed overall by the album. If anything, it just makes me feel lucky to be living in NYC, where there are millions of different stories to tell (the plotlines here are just a small sample size).
I don’t really hear Colton’s “Kermit” voice here that other people were nitpicking - I think he makes a decent crooner - and Uzele is just okay.
The orchestra and orchestrations are the star of this recording. This should have been a major contender for the Tony for Orchestrations listening to this album. Definitely makes the album worth the listen.
I live in London, so not got over to see this yet but, for me, this is hands down the cast recording of the season if not beyond. Stunning orchestrations, yes. But, my oh my, those Kander & Ebb songs (and shout out to Miranda too). Unbeatable. Colton Ryan blew me away. Unique and non cookie cutter crooner broadway sound. Anna Uzele’s delivery is assured even though I initially found it a bit (non musical phrase) ‘squeaky’, but then I’ve just got to World Goes Round and she has seriously blown it out the park so what do I know. All is forgiven!
Just sensational. If anyone involved in this recording is reading this, thank you for this gift.

Agreed

I started listening to the recording and it bores me, I really don't think anyone can act and perform " but the world goes round" like LIZA can/could.
