... a friend just called with a cellclip of "Cinema Italiano"- Bacharach where are you?! There you are Tom Jones!

Apparently, we'll be hearing A LOT more about NINE very soon.

There are posts on other boards about this as well.

9/10 is what I've been told. I wish I was there myself, DAMMIT!

I'll do my digging and find out the vibes...

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I heard that they cut Luisa's two solos (My Husband Makes Movies and Be On Your Own).
If anyone can confirm or hopefully deny these rumors please post!

IMDB's message boards has reports:

Apparently, the song "Nine" as axed, along with "Be On Your Own."

Here are the 2 threads about it:

I'm really disappointed about losing Be On Your Own. One of the best songs in the show. Very haunting. And as I recall, the melody plays in the underscoring a lot. Oh, well. I'm glad that they still liked Cotillard's performance, despite cutting such a terrific song. I hope she still tries to leave him in the story. If not, where's the drama?

And although "Nine" isn't one of my favorite songs in the show, if you cut it, I can see how people in the audience would be wondering why this movie is even called "Nine." Without that song, it's barely touched upon. Unless they explain it in a new/added way.

Sounds like everone thinks Fergie is the big breakout performance of this film.

Gotta hand it to her, she shocked us all when she was cast, but it looks like she held her own.

Wow.
I'm shocked they cut "Be On Your Own."
But it sounds like the movie doesn't suck.
I guess I'll have to wait till November to see for myself!

Keep in mind, the show's original composer Maury Yeston is fully involved with this film adaptation so any additions and/or changes to the score are with approval.

"Both sang very well and "Call from the Vatican" and "My Husband Makes Movies" are two of the best numbers in the film. The best number however is "Be Italian" which Fergie absolutely nails.

The staging, choreography, art direction and all techinical aspects are exceptional.

My biggest isssues were with pacing, reptitiveniss, lack of memorable music and less than engaging characters or character development. Also Kate Hudson's singing is clearly the weakest and she doesn't connect on what is supposed to be a real change of pace show stopper in the middle of the film. There are no big numbers with the whole cast (except the opener which includes no actual singing) and every song is a solo."

Well, that means absolutely nothing if the changes aren't effective. I don't care who approved them. Nope, not even the Pope.

Just felt that needed to be said before people start with the "... poor Maury Yeston -- he must be upset they dropped this and that, etc." postings.

This was the same scenario with SWEENEY TODD until people learned that Stephen Sondheim was approving all the changes being made to the score for the film adaptation.

"Approving" and "having final say" are also two entirely different things, Brody.

The original writer is almost never the final say in a movie. Ever. It's not like the theatre at all. And unless a writer wants to be branded as difficult or perhaps even fired from the film with a tainted reputation (as "non-collaborative" and uncooperative), they're going to smile, and nod, and be as agreeable as humanly possible. Unless something is seriously wrong or out-of-step. Even then, they would raise a big red flag, but that doesn't mean their advice would be strictly taken. This is a new job with a new contract and paycheck. It offers them a chance to revisit old material for a different medium. Plus, Sondheim and Yeston aren't filmmakers. They were hired as artistic advisors and composers, not producers and directors. The final say in movies is nearly always "the money" (meaning the exec. producers and the studio heads). Very few exceptions to that rule.

I am truly disappointed about the loss of Be On Your Own.

Nine holds a special place in my heart, so I'm nervous in general about the movie adaptation. I think I need to psyche myself up to think it's going to absolutely suck so I'll (hopefully) be surprised.

On a completely different topic, the other movie coming out this year called "9" looks stunning. I can see them both being recognized at the Academy Awards. How confusing is that going to be?

I'm very sad about losing "Be On Your Own." Not only is it one of my favorites but I was really looking forward to Cotillard's performance of it. At least they still have "My Husband Makes Movies," another of my favorites.

And I'm very happy to hear Fergie nails it. I was never wary of her casting and I was impressed by the clip in the trailer, but it's nice to hear confirmation that I'm not just being lenient.

I'm very excited for November to see the final cut.

I know this is way too early to call ... but I'm guessing "Nine" won't be Oscar-bait, with the exception of some technical nominations, and perhaps one or two acting nods. It still stands to make some money, though, especially with that cast.

I hope I'm wrong with this early hunch. It sounds like Marshall et al were struggling with some major elements. Cutting "Be On Your Own" and replacing it with a weaker song? Not exactly a good move. And this (wonderful) song is a key dramatic and romantic part of "Nine." Also a key thematic element musically. If they weakened that scene or threw the song away because they didn't know how to film it, they can kiss Oscar goodbye.

Kind of reminds me of when they threw out "Tomorrow" in the movie Annie and just played it over the main titles and did the reprise in the White House. They cut out the story's heart.

****mild spoilers****

Guido is an egomaniac and a bit of a jerk. When his wife finally calls him on his sh*t and leaves him, this is the way we get to the "heart" of the story. It's the main physical dramatic conflict outside of Guido's emotional crisis in his head. I'm sure the conflict is still in there. It has to be.

But it would be like having Effie thrown out of the Dreams in Dreamgirls, but then cutting And I'm Tellin' You... replacing it with some new song.

Sure, go ahead. And good luck.

Best, you summed up what I am having trouble putting into words.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I think right now it is way too early to judge how the film will turn out. One thing to keep in mind is that even though there will be lots of musical changes, there will be lots of script changes that might help the musical cuts make sense. Bottom line is, the Chicago film was excellent and the NINE trailer made the movie look fantastic...so I am excited.

I honestly don't know anything about NINE, therefore I'm going to see this movie with no expectations. I'm pretty excited though, especially with the kind of star power and creative team this film has!

I cannot believe they kept "Simple" (another one of my favorites). It's a duet now, right?

Jane Krakowski REALLY spoiled 'Simple' for me. I'm going to end up comparing hear vocals to whomever is singing that part similar to hers.
