Seven years without his insufferable ego would be a blessing.

WTF??? He was detained three weeks ago?
I don’t engage much with social media, but surely someone noticed he went radio silent.
Can’t wait to see this ordeal translated into a play or short form essay in Interview or HBO miniseries or Twitter thread or whatever it is the guy does next.
Best of luck. Drugs are problematic, but drug laws are too.
I will never understand why people think it’s okay to bring illicit substances across international borders while traveling. I get paranoid about my regular medications.
To that end, an average dose of MDMA is roughly 50-100mg, so carrying around 780mg definitely is not a good look at all when trying to argue against a potential smuggling case. With that amount, he’d be rolling himself right into the Pacific Ocean

welp
Ever since seeing Brokedown Palace 26 years ago, I’m hyper paranoid about traveling, even domestically with medication.
Gurrrrrrrl.
Yeah that’s… quite a bit of MDMA to have in one’s possession.
Stupid is as stupid does.

From Google:
Japan can hold you for up to 23 days without a charge, during which time they'll try to force a confession. They can interrogate you without a lawyer present, and their conviction rate is 99%.
I don't know what the odds are that he'll actually spend the next 7 years in Japanese prison, but he is most likely cooked.

How damn stupid. Let’s hope they don’t let him off lightly.

When you chase the life of a celebrity, you end up here.
Is it wrong that this made me smile and chuckle? Can't wait until he spins this into some new and pretentious project.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Americans are so foolish when they think about traveling.

I listened to a podcast yesterday about an Australian woman who was arrested in Japan because she had inadvertently brought meth into the country on behalf of the man she'd been seeing online, was held for almost a year before trial with no contact with her family, and then even though the courts acknowledged she was clearly the victim of a romance scam she was still sentenced to 7 years in prison due to overlooking red flags in the relationship.
Japan doesn't screw around when it comes to narcotics.
I mean, the Japanese legal system is basically rigged against you and is quite punitive.
I guess we'll see how well-connected JOH truly is. I doubt he will actually serve a years-long prison term.

This is going to be hilarious if JOH takes a MAGA turn to try to get favor from Trump.
Two things can be true here: 1) many drug laws are not only extremely outdated, but unnecessarily punitive; and 2) this man should absolutely have known better than to travel to Japan carrying that much of an illegal substance. The latter is my dominant thought because I guarantee his thought process was “That won’t happen to me” as he packed it in his bag, but holding anyone in prison and forcing a confession in the absence of representation is morally repugnant to me.
Frankly, I’m shocked this hasn’t already happened to him, since he’s all but a poster child for recreational party drugs.

I’m actually surprised that I’m not the only one that had this thought as well.
Basically - he’s cooked personally and career-wise; that’s a given. I think the only thing he should be thankful for is the fact that he got busted in probably one of the only countries in Asia that doesn’t impose the death penalty for drug smuggling offenses, which is the case in nearly every country surrounding Japan.
I don't think he's personally or professionally cooked. He has many influential allies and friends who will aid him as much as they can and make space for him when he returns. A one-time drug offense is easy to shrug off- worse things have been easily shrugged off. We'll likely have a rehabilitation moment, followed by a pretentious play about his experience.
Whether it's Trump committing war crimes by murdering people in pleasure boats in the Caribbean, or these jack-booted assholes in Japan, the War on Drugs needs to stop everywhere and immediately.

And I will never understand why anyone would think it's okay to throw someone in a cage because they're carrying... well, whatever the **** they want to carry as long as it's not actively hurting you.

Who cares? As long as he's not actively hurting you with it, it's precisely none of anyone's business.
The real criminals are the legislators, police officers, and judges who execute the War on Drugs, and I hope to live to see them pay gravely for their crimes.
That's maybe 10 pills. It's certainly possible he'll be convicted and spend time imprisoned but, I can't imagine his career is "cooked" if he goes free. This is not a serious amount of a drug that many people argue has a lot of therapeutic value. This is easily spinnable and, let's be serious, not that big of a deal.
Now. Is it extremely arrogant to think you can get away with something like this? Yea. He's the worst person. But the "crime" here isn't really a huge moral failing.

I agree with you but that argument does not help somebody in JOH's situation. A flagrant disregard for a country's laws, even if you do not agree with them, is going to get you in trouble.
