I was sorta excited for this but they’re cutting some of my favorite songs (which I could be okay with if it structurally makes sense) but the trailer looks so cotton Candy bubble gum and not like they’re trying at all to connect with the audience. Just be flashy
No disrespect to JRB, but what's up with the trailer calling this a "hit Broadway musical"? Since when is a 3 month run a hit? Paradise Square ran longer.
here is the full opportunity musical number. wow the choreography is very excellent and it’s interesting how they changed up the lyrics and added a rap to it. it looks so much fun
I'm glad they released those selections, now I know to avoid this like the plague. Personally, I'd rather have a root canal than watch another second of this.
Watching this movie right now. The kids are all crazy talented, and I'm glad JRB's getting some of that sweet Netflix money, but as a 24-year-old man, I have the sneaking suspicion that this might not be my thing. It's kind of like a Disney Channel Original Movie with really good music and production value.
Fun to see such a talented young and diverse cast! I'm disappointed they cut so much of the music out. There's so many gems in the stage show, feels weird to leave them out. Not a great movie by any means, but fun enough and again, exciting to see such a talented crew of up-and-coming performers.

I was shocked by that one. I was waiting for that song and it never came. Definitely my favorite from the show. So sad they cut it.
The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince
Evan as a character is atrociously written. I just don’t care about him at all. This party never feels like it has stakes, this divorce is cliff notes, he comes off elitist without anyone bringing him down to earth- really the New Yorker snobbiness oozing out of this movie (and show) with no self awareness is so irritating.
as for the movie itself- what a low staked cheap looking mess. Yikes. And it’s a shame cause JRB wrote some really solid songs and good new ones and there are a few that standout as being well choreographed (albeit terribly shot) but man- this is walmart dvd level I’m sorry.
the show was flawed absolutely, but there was an HONEST earnestness. This is Hallmark mixed with Disney Channel. Yikes.
I mean it was cute I guess. The kids are talented there is no doubt about that. But like they switched a lot around, they changed a ton of lyrics I didn’t think they needed to, and they cut some of the best songs.
The adult characters do add a bit of depth that the stage musical never had, but I agree it's a shame they cut some of the best songs –– since the ones that replaced them aren't an improvement and don't majorly help the story
It's shot & designed with the artistry of a lipstick commercial. The kind of overly slick, flat cinematography that is the "house style" of Netflix for all but their auteur filmmakers. The cast is uniformly strong, but lacks most of the awkwardness and visual hiccups of kids going through puberty. There's a (sickening) element of the "young kids trying to look like adults/older teens" thing we see so much in media and on social nowadays.
This show remains JRB's most lucrative property.
the film has the feel of a Disney Channel original movie, and that is not a bad thing for its target demo.
Well. I am a 48 year old man and I loved it. I liked the Broadway show because of Aaron Simon Gross' performance as Archie. The story and score as a whole is better here in the movie. And the casting is brilliant. It's like a perfect world. The opening number, "Bad News," and "A Little More Homework To Do" really soared. I just really enjoyed it. And I hate "High School Musical." I just don't connect with it. I don't know why. Where HSM feels fake, 13 feels better than real. This is the first time I was 100% satisfied with a JRB product. I loved Debra Messing's singing. Liz Caplan does it again! I wonder what the original kids think about it now that they are in their 30s.
i just finished watching the film and honestly it is not a great movie at all. the only word i can come up with to describe this movie is STERILIZED. they completely removed all mentions of sexuality, underage drinking, the story is literally about wanting to grow up quickly and realizing you can still take time to be a kid. and they cut all of the funniest jokes/plotlines. the demographic for this musical is teens, not 8 or 9 year olds. and they also cut so many songs. the other big change from the original musical that absolutely kills the movie is the addition of adult characters. i would be fine with changes if the changes didn't just make it so lame. the characters and conflict are sanded down until there's almost nothing there. it's sad we're at a point where anything aimed at kids needs to be made this tame. however, the cast is insanely talented and diverse and they did an amazing job. this movie was such a disappointment
