The trailer was wonderful and I absolutely LOVE the Bill Gold inspired poster. I can't wait for this movie, it's in my top 5 most awaited films of this year.
The trailer still makes me very nervous... but damned if it also didn't make me finally cave and decide that I will see this. Something about the animations are both stunningly beautiful and horribly gaudy at the same time to my eyes. I don't know if I love it or I hate it.
But what this trailer gives me is a new fear as I watch this. That this not REALLY a "sequel" but a basically might as well be a remake like what they did with Force Awakens. Rather than something new that refreshes the spirit of the original, you end up with a lot of the same general plot points in a way that pretty much parallels the original. The kids are trouble makers that the adults can't understand so Mary shows up and the kids don't believe in her because magic isn't real but with the help but the bad accented cockney talking working class guy, they believe again. They have a few very similar magical trips as they did in the original. The adults get mad at her for preventing the kids from growing up like they should cus times are haaaaaard and she in turn helps the adult to remember what it's like to be a kid again. You got a not always around women's rights lady popping in from time to time, an old woman that everyone is creeped out by but the kids see her true beauty and become her friend. There is a big dance number with the working-class guys pals. Oh no the young bank guy is now the old back guy like his father before him he has to be reminded the same lesson his father learn. And in the end, the family's problems are solved and she leaves. Already in this trailer I see a number of almost shot for shot moments from the original.....
This is clearly inspired by the second book, MARY POPPINS RETURNS. The element of the Banks children being grown now is new to the film, but the other images depicted look to be straight out of that second book. The MARY POPPINS books are episodic rather than narrative. So yes, they all seem to be variations on the same concept as the first story. I wouldn't take that to interpret this is a reboot or remake though.
“I knew who I was this morning, but I've changed a few times since then.”
If anything, I'm more worried that they may have unintentionally copied Nanny McPhee with the whole "nanny comes to save everyone after mother's death leaves the family in shambles" plot.
"Was uns befreit, das muss stärker sein als wir es sind." -Tanz der Vampire
Scarlet's fears are valid, but I'm hoping that this talented team was smart enough to move beyond the original film and find exciting new things to add to the "sequel." On that subject, I'm fearful that Lin's character is just Bert with a different name. (Though I think Bert in the original film is an amalgam of a few characters from the book.)
And if we're picking on this for being derivative of NANNY McPHEE, then I guess the original film is derivative of the stage production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC -- Babysitter Brings Father Closer To His Children.

This as well because while I don't know if it's part of this plot any longer or if by now it's been cut but I recall in an early EARLY press release for this one, their was mention of a like female house keeper character that was clearly intended to end up with Micheal thanks to Mary's magic and I felt like "Omg someone tell me they see that that's the plot of Nanny McPhee."
EDIT: I looked it up and they seemed to aged up the housemaid from that early EARLY press release so they avoid that thank goodness.
I'd love to see Glynis Johns make a cameo, perhaps as the lady in the park feeding the birds. That would be cool; as well as Julie, of course. Guess I'm a sucker for nostalgia.

Not sure if you're joking, but it kinda looked like a face/head-replacment CGI job. (or at least it does on my laptop... will watch it HD/big screen later)"
Dick Van Dyke is most certainly doing his own dancing. He's spoken about it in interviews. He'll usually break out into a dance whenever he's on a talk show.
^^Oh I never forgot Dick at that telecast...I'm pretty sure my roomie and I screamed when that happened because it was so unexpected, and it was just a damn delight!
As for the topic at hand...I'm still forming thoughts. I honestly don't know how I feel about it except to say that thus far I'm not impressed. I don't hate anything, just...meh. I was more excited about Christopher Robin as Pooh is part of my literal identity, and while it was far from perfect, it was fun because at least a story about an adult C.R. makes a certain amount of sense. I feel like any M.P. "sequel" is just gonna rehash what we already know and not add anything to the original. Dame Julie and Dick are so prolific in the original that one can't separate the two, and I usually can. Trying to separate what has become part of humanity's cultural lexicon from a remake or sequel, or whatever, is just something that shouldn't be done. Julie will be the M.P. for all time, she's immortalized really.
As for LMM...frankly I don't think it has anything to do with his being of Latin American descent. It's has everything to with even then, he reads so modern that he doesn't fit in early 1900s England and dat accent...it's just as mock worthy as Dick's but somehow we've all come to accept Dick's horrid Cockney accent along the way. Will I see this anyway? Yes. But I can't imagine having a super great opinion about it. But I'm willing to remain open minded.
BONUS: Queen Angela has a solo!! https://www.bustle.com/p/all-the-songs-in-mary-poppins-returns-include-lin-manuel-miranda-rapping-a-meryl-streep-cameo-11890285
Gosh, that was darn worth the wait. The whole cast looks and sounds great. Lin is adorable as always! Emily is the perfect successor to Julie Andrews, but there is a huge amount of emptiness with Julie Andrews not being Mary. I know it’s not fair to compare Emily to Julie, the character just feels off without her.
The animated scene does look fake so far, as in the green screen is reeaaalllllyyyy obvious and the colors are too bright (like Lin and Emily’s clothes), but the animation is so gorgeous & alive that I don’t really care. And god, it is so so welcomed!
I’m looking forward to the songs (AHHHHHH ANGELA), but I’m frustrated they’re basically ripoffs of the original songs. I hope the movie isn’t too by the numbers.
Don’t always know how it’s really gonna look as the studios’ marketing departments usually kick up the color and brightness for ads/trailers. I’m staying optimistic.
Seeing Angela was certainly the most thrilling part of that trailer but I found all of it to be very appealing. I am most definitely looking forward to it.

If you are referring to the thread that was out months ago regarding the test screenings .,. BWW removed it. So not many people read it. It was a very mixed ( and that is being kind) reaction.
I think they're joking about the Cynthia Erivo thread where one poster is going off-the-rails that Brit born Erivo is taking the role of Harriet Tubman away from potential African-American actresses who are actually descended from slaves.
Judging by all the comments and reactions in the trailer reviews for this on Youtube I think Disney has a winner here!! The original holds a special place in many people's hearts and nothing will ever top it but after watching this new trailer it should ease any qualms people had about it as it appears Disney has really made a conscious effort to capture the "essence" of the original. The only thing I was hoping for was a little bit more of some of the new musical numbers in this one but Emily Blunt barely gets to sing one phrase which doesn't really give much of an indication as to what the songs will be like ... the bar was set pretty high when you have "A Spoonful of Sugar", "Chim Chim Cheree", and "Supercali ..." to live up to. So happy to see Dick Van Dyke has a small role but I completely understand why Julie Andrews turned them down ... she didn't want to take any of the spotlight away from Emily Blunt and you know that would have been inevitable because as soon as she would have appeared on screen people would have said "There's the REAL Mary Poppins". Nobody will ever compare to Julie Andrews but I think Emily Blunt will be a fine successor.
"Trip A Little Light" - Lin-Manuel Miranda /Lamplighters [mirrors "Step in Time"]
"Underneath The Lovely London Sky" - Lin-Manuel Miranda
"The Place Where Lost Things Go" - Emily Blunt [mirrors "Feed the Birds"]
"Can You Imagine That" - Emily Blunt [mirrors "A Spoonful of Sugar"]
"The Royal Doulton Music Hall" & "A Cover Is Not the Book" - [mirrors the "Jolly Holiday" sequence and will include animated penguins]
"Turning Turtle" - Meryl Streep [mirrors the "I Love To Laugh" sequence]
"Nowhere To Go But Up" - Angela Lansbury is featured - [mirrors "Let's Go Fly a Kite"]
I don't know if this is just a partial or complete list. I got the list from an article published over at the bustle.com website which can be found here.
It's quite ironic that the Mary Poppins Returns poster is obviously influenced by the My Fair Lady film poster considering that the original Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady competed in the same Academy Awards season. Plus while Bob Gold did help with the formatting of the legendary film poster, it was actually the late great Bob Peak who did the beautiful illustration work. Peak also designed other film posters throughout his entire career, including my personal favorite Excalibur.
Plus I do like the titles of the songs, I'm crossing my fingers for Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman to write some truly wonderful songs. Shaiman's score I'll bet is going to be just grand to listen to with that large, lavish film orchestra. Man, Disney is pulling out the stops for this movie to succeed that I'm glad they're putting a lot of effort into marketing the movie.
