Shorts? Absolutely on the menu. Just wear a shirt with sleeves, gentlemen.
People are paying to watch what's on stage, not what's in the audience.

Red and black flannel with the sleeves cut off, my three cheers for sweet revenge shirt, and some black cargo pants.
I hate shorts but I just don't like the way my legs look, they look good on literally anyone else. Wear whatever the hell you want.
I'm regularly rocking a two inch inseam at the theatre during the summer tbh. Did so last night, even. Viva la shorts!

Personally, I would not but don't care if others do wear them. Years ago, I was in Europe in August and cities like Barcelona and Rome had places that you could not wear shorts. For that trip, I bought a few pairs of light weight long pants and was fine even with 90-degree temperature. So, when NYC is that hot, I wear short sleeve shirt and those type of pants to a show. I will bring sports jacket with me just in case theater or restaurant later in freezing - lol

I think it’s sloppy, but understand this ship has sailed. People will wear what they want…no matter the occasion. I’m done fighting it. Just tell myself that at least they’re helping keep live theatre going. Makes me feel better whenever I see theatre goers in shorts, flip flops, and graphic tees (which is quite often).

Yall spend a lot of money to watch theatre in this city. Don't do that having to sweat your way through a show. Wear whatever you want.
The skin exposure isn’t what I’d concern myself with. I always attempt to dress nicely (usually nice shorts/pants and collared shirt or sweater), but I’d prefer the emphasis on good personal hygiene and clothing/hairstyles that don’t obstruct sightlines.

An elderly couple behind a shorts-clad me last weekend attending SMASH on an 85 degree afternoon were complaining OPENLY about how I was wearing shorts and how people used to dress nicely to go to the theatre.
They then proceeded to talk through a good amount of the show, acting shocked when asked to be quiet, and both of their phones went off multiple times.
My shorts were obviously the problem in the audience that day.

You can wear anything to the theatre nowadays. Shorts and t-shirts are totally fine. Just don't go shirtless.

I would have gladly told them to mind their damn business. Unless they’re paying for my tickets, I’ll wear whatever I damn well please.

Wear whatever you want as long as it’s not vulgar/offensive. I usually go to the theatre after a long day of work at a fairly physical job. Depending on the show/venue and if I plan on going to a specific restaurant, I may bring a button-down shirt to put over my t-shirt, but generally speaking comfort is paramount. The actors can’t see what you’re wearing, nor can anyone when the house lights are down.
I saw an audience member using an honest to god fancy lorgnette recently… at Avenue Q of all shows!
And please don't forget to use deodorant! Some of you may dress nicely but smell really bad.
During the summer I still like throwing on a light blazer with shorts but this alternate option always suits many occasions:
