All I remember of that night were unstoppable tears
I think as long as you do not look like Richard Simmons on the talk show circuit you will be fine. But if you are planning to sit in the front row at the Beaumont Theatre it would be best to wear your long underwear along with your fake fur coat.
There are shorts and there are shorts...use your judgement.
That said, I would never consider going to the theater at any time of year without numerous layers that could come on or off depending on the temperature in the theater, and more importantly the temperature at your particular seat. (it may be freezing downstairs and warmer upstairs, etc.)
Since most theaters in summer feel like you have entered the North Pole, lots of people are always complaining how cold it is. I would always wear a top (or two) and then maybe bring a hoodie..in case I am in the line of AC blowing at my head...and longer pants. I have also been known to bring socks in case as well. Being uncomfortable during a show is not my favorite way to spend time.
I actually wore shorts last night in Orlando at Come From Away. I had a two hour drive each way, so I wanted to be comfortable. There were a lot of men in shorts. However, it was freezing in the theater. It really had a negative impact in watching the show. Thank goodness, it was only 90 minutes.

I switched over when I saw Sweeney right after going to the Pride Parade because I wasn't going to have time to go home and wasn't going to go to Pride outside in the sun in 80 degree heat in pants. Since then I've mostly done shorts. I took out pants for some more "prestige" shows like Parade and Prima Facie. But I was not going to suffer through pants for Once Upon a One More Time, Peter Pan Goes Wrong, or Back to the Future. If the tourists there will be wearing shorts, then I will be wearing shorts.

I don't visit NYC or Broadway much in the summer due to the heat. But if I do, then I'm wearing shorts and being as comfortable as possible.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Shorts should be restricted to matinees only. People should have some respect for those who do not wish to gaze upon their unsightly thighs or rub up against their naked, sweaty flesh when attempting to have an elegant night out in NYC.

On hot summer days nobody(including anyone in the industry) would begrudge someone wearing shorts. Now, flip flops.........hmmmmmmmm? That might be a little different. To discourage 'dem toes being out next to someone for 3 hours, to all the flip floppers out there, imagine the person next to you has a toe fetish and they don't care if you have nasty hairy scary toes that look like Moe, Curly and Larry.........they WILL be looking at your toes the whole time and not the show. Your choice. Choose wisely.
I will note that theatres can be downright cold on hot days, which seems good but might not be. After one particularly uncomfortable experience, I started putting a jacket in my bag.

While I personally prefer to wear pants to the theatre, in the bad summer months, I have no problem wearing a nice shirt and khaki shorts. Sometimes, especially this week, it's just TOO DAMN HOT to wear long pants.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
Literally wear whatever the **** you want. I always wear khaki shorts to the theatre when it’s hot out. I promise nobody is looking at you and there’s no expectation to dress nicely to the theater in 2023.
Even in the heat, I usually try to wear pants, just because it can be too cold inside the theatre. Since I'll already be wearing short sleeves, I don't want to run the risk of freezing for 3 hours, which can be just as uncomfortable as being too warm.

Really? This is the level of stupidity this thread has devolved to? Foot fetishists will be so overcome that they will only be able to stare lustily at your feet?
At a performance of Moulin Rouge at the venerable Academy of Music many attendees wore shorts. In years past this being seen would have sent many into shock. Not so today. Tastefully comfortable sounds about right especially in this very hot summer.
