Oklahoma! Final week rush and standing room.

Hi all! I have a post dated to Oklahoma! that I couldn’t use several months ago because Ali was absent. Then I got very sick and I wasn’t able to go. I broke my ribs. Now it’s the final week and I doubt I’ll be able to use my post dated ticket since it’s pretty much sold out this week, I would imagine. Has anyone tried the lottery this week? Any luck? Also, is standing room still available this week? Has anyone tried it and what time did you get there? I know they do have a lot of spaces for standing room, so I guess that’s my best chance. Thank you so much in advance!

Don't lead with the fact that you'll take standing room. Just ask to post date FIRST, and see what they come back with...

Ahh! I'm so happy they did that for you!! And I'm so happy you loved the show!

Anyone know if it was/will be taped/filmed. I realize the nature of the staging will make such a thing far less exciting than seeing it in person, but this is a very exciting take, well-realized, and it would be nice to have it preserved. I enjoy the cast recording quite a bit.

It feels slightly less abstract and ambiguous and is more clear that it's about women's sexual anxiety (right?). I saw it initially at SAW and while I liked the Dream Ballet there, I could see how someone that wasn't familiar with the show could miss the point of that scene. It also feels darker and scarier now. I loved it, but I also have a bit of history with abstract dance and theater so maybe that's why. It just felt clearer and the emotion of the dance felt clearer.

Okay, thank you. From what I've seen of it, it's the one part of the interpretation I thought didn't work, but it will be interesting now that that it's been clarified--and that the clearer version of the ballet is the one included in the recent filming. I'll probably always love traditional Oklahoma! best, but everything I've seen (and I've tracked down all the video I can) and read and heard (again, really enjoy the cast album, also looked up radio/podcast appearances by the cast) makes me thing this is a very effective interpretation.

Sooo frustrating not to live anywhere near New York.

It's still the one part of this production I don't enjoy. It goes on for too long and the cacophonous music doesn't feel intense, just tiresome. To me, it's still both too abstract and too specific. It's using a dance language that isn't legible to me. OK, she kind of seems like she's riding a horse or is a horse. But why is she scooting her butt on the floor? I don't think it communicates anything that the actress playing Laurey doesn't communicate much more effectively in the rest of the show. The specific choices also make it very muddled. It doesn't come to a satisfying conclusion where you understand what Laurey wants. Why does she go to a male ensemble member and then almost kiss Gertie? Why are boots raining down? And then Jud comes out to chase her?

I'm totally fine with a dream ballet that feels like a fever dream/drug trip that expresses the conflict between Laurey's frigidity and awkwardness despite her rising sexual desire and longing for companionship. It would have been great to bring in another dancer to partner her to show how she wanted Curly to treat her from the start and how she wanted him in spite of his blustering/arrogance but she held herself back until she could be sure there really was a softer, more genuine side of him behind that. That's not this dance. That's expressed in the rest of the show, but not in this still muddled piece of choreography. I also don't get clear emotions from the dancer like fear or desire or anger or whatever. It ends up just feeling like posturing and bravado.

I do think it comes across like a choice. It's just a choice that I don't get anything out of."
