The list is "in formation" but Spider-Man is already listed as a Best Musical nominee and Stick Fly is up for Best Play, so you can already tell it's gonna be a DELIGHT.
Nice Work has the most nominations without getting a Best Musical nod, interestingly. The Play category makes more sense to me now that I realize Clybourne Park and Other Desert Cities were previously eligible. Still...Chinglish deserved it over Stick Fly.
I'm happy to see CARRIE get recognized. I really loved it and stick by my opinion that Molly Ranson gave the best performance I've seen so far this season from a leading lady in a musical. Too bad she wasn't recognized.
But, as usual, this is a bizarre crop of nominees overall.
There are things I think they got right. Best Actress in a Musical seems spot on. Featured Actor in a Play is pretty great. Revival of a Musical (sadly) probably got the best 4 (of 6). But man, this is a week year.
Wow... this indicates nothing as far as how Tony noms will pay out, for example with no noms for Hugh Dancy or Nina Arianda. Surprises (on first glance -- and there are PLENTY) are no direction or choreography noms for FOLLIES and that LUCKY GUY was nominated for Best OB Musical!
I meant weak year in terms of nominations, not productions. Though, while it can certainly be argued that it's a bad year for musicals, I do personally think it's been a great season for plays.
Since Outer Critic Circle is usually the most lets say lenient with criteria can we now assume that Once is not eligible for Best Score for the tony's?
I understand Nina Arianda was not eligible, but my point is that because there are so many productions not eligible this season in the Outer Circle realm, their roster of nominees forecasts very little in terms of Tony noms.
I was 99.9% sure it was not going to be ineligible this was just confirming that..and wow no Kara Lindsay for Newsies and I thought she was the front runner
I am just really happy about Phillip Boykin. I think he is giving one of the best performances I have seen this year, and I hope he wins every award. I was worried he'd be overlooked because he's from the opera world and unknown to the theater community, but hopefully he'll be on everyone's list.
I'm surprised Andrew Keenan Bolger got nominated for Newsies but not Kara Lindsay, he's great as Crutchie but its not a performance I'd consider award winning.
