This is one of those shows where for whatever reason I feel like I should want to see it, but nothing I've heard about it is compelling me to do so.
Now that the praise for Joaquina is official, the production really should release a clip of "Let It Burn." If I hadn't already seen the show, that song and her vocal performance would probably be enough for me to buy a (cheap) ticket.

Joe Crowley, a former congressman who was unseated by AOC, has a co-producing credit but I certainly wouldn't call him "the lead investor" unless you'd like to share how much he personally contributed + raised. A lot of people have connections to pols (such as Barry Diller taking the Clintons to various shows, or pre-POTUS Trump attending Jordan Roth's wedding).
I suspect the attendance had as much to do with the NYC story as it did with Crowley.

I just checked the official website and, despite the fact that there are a number of ready-made pull quotes even from the mixed-to-poor reviews ("It makes you believe in making history." - Jesse Green, NYT; "Joaquina Kalukango delivers an exhilarating, star-making performance." - Variety), absolutely nothing has been added to the homepage the day after opening. Honestly, it's like they're not even trying at this point.

They really should. It's all over the internet and it blows me away every single time. Her vocals. Jesus Christ. Incredible.

I couldn't agree more. It's extraordinary. And I'm confused as to why the ensemble isn't all over morning television dancing. Joaquina and the dancing are the best they've got and I think they'd sell a lot of tickets. The show is fairly hack-y but I think it's the kind of thing that should connect with a popular audience right now.
Don't know why, but from all the reviews, this throwaway bit from the Times' just sticks out...

Because the show had less than 3 weeks of previews, there was a COVID outbreak in the company, and every morning & late-night show gets pitches from every Broadway show and they pick and choose which shows they would like to invite to perform. And because the entire communications strategy on this show has not been good.

You also have the ability to pay an ad agency and pr firm upfront and everyone is very busy. There is no drought when it comes to work.

The show has been active on Twitter and Facebook.
Plus, this morning there were ads on WCBS-AM 880 mentioning the positive reviews.

I'd suspect them on GMA or The View now that they're open.

That should sell a dozen tickets. As far as I can tell, the only place they have succeeded in putting bodies in seats in large numbers is via the papering organizations. On the day after opening night, when successful shows are wrapping big numbers, this show has released tickets to every major and at least some secondary and tertiary papering outlets. You can't make this stuff up.
Every performance is on TDF this week. The show is in dire need of a visible rebranding; losing the quaint street lamp (as one critic noticed, not in the show) and replacing it with images of what tickets purchase: fiery performance that conjures the very shows this one aims to emulate: Ragtime and Les Miz. I walked by the Barrymore on the way to How I Learned to Drive, and the photos outside the theater are vivid and striking. Those glimpses promise an experience. And need to be elsewhere.

and behold one of the most gutsiest reviews:
https://nypost.com/2022/04/04/paradise-square-on-broadway-loud-depressing-90s-retread/
and before everyone says , theatregoers don't read The Post, think again
Oh I'm sure they do and if you had scrolled up you would have realized that was already posted hours ago. Oops.
I actually love reading his reviews because he's always so droll and seems so uninterested in anything.
The marketing is bad. The lamp post imagery is weird. Nothing exciting about it.

Your description of this analytically inert and intellectually vapid review as "gutsy" is the best proof we have seen so far that you and your one-track mind are running out of oxygen.
Oh, and while it is true that theatregoers read parts of the Post (I depend on the sports coverage), they don't read the theatre page. (And that's not open to debate.) Think again lol. (PS, it's 2022, the data is easy to come by.)

Thanks Hogan! your point , The New York Post has now real power or influence. Right! Now, lets bury our heads in the sand. Johnny's points were what the average tourist will come away with after buying a discounted ticket after not getting into Funny Girl or Mr. Saturday Night.

Your post is hard to decipher. Did you mean "The New York Post has NO power or influence"? [in which case I guess you were trying to be sarcastic]
Or did you actually mean "The New York Post NOW HAS real power or influence"? [in which case I guess you were being serious]
That of course betrays a lack of understanding of Venn Diagrams on your part. As I said, lots of people read the Post, but they read it selectively. And lots of people who read the Post never ever go to the theatre. And hardly any "tourists who buy discounted tickets" read the Post. These are not susceptible to "head in the sand" guessing; they are based on data . We know who reads what in 2022.
And why wouldn't a tourist get into the 2 shows you mention? Best to keep up if you are going to post, lest someone decide you are naive and unaware.
You do not need to explain your strange obsession with this show. You are free to like and dislike the show, Garth, or whatever you choose. I guarantee you I have more grievances with Garth than you do. I was very vocal about that long before you traipsed in and will likely be after your oxygen evaporates. Enjoy.

Excellent. Thanks for letting us know. That is the absolute bare minimum of what a big Broadway musical should be doing the day after Opening. Maybe their 663 Twitter followers can arrange a group sale to go see it together, they'd fill the orch and spill into the mezz

I’m not surprised by the reviews and I agree with many of them but I’m sad to see it casting such a negative light on what I found to be a worthwhile theatrical experience. I think the fact that it ends so strongly had me leaving the theatre like “yes I’m glad I saw that” even though much of what leads up to the ending didn’t quite work.

THANKS HOGANS! I DO LOVE TRAIPSING! I have no obsession with the show, I just think it stinks. And thanks for the NY Post demographic data. I did not realize you were a print aficionado! When you have a minute can you fill me in on Field and Stream readers, do they buy tickets?
