Patti could be an interesting Grizabella, I'd love to see her in the role. This was not Miss LuPone's best performance, though. I think she could actually do WAY more with this song.

I don't believe that is Patti. That sounds way too much like Laurie Beechman.
That is not Patti LuPone.
Yes, it's her circa 1991. She stepped in for Michael Crawford in the Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber tour. I believe I've heard a similar-quality recording of her singing Tell Me On a Sunday.
Maybe now we can hear Betty Buckley sing "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"? Imagine that in your mind. from RC in Austin, Texas

That sounds like someone trying to sing LIKE Patti LuPone.

I'm really confused by all the naysayers--this sounds quite distinctly like Patti to me.

It sounds like someone trying to Impersonate her vocal tone. I highly doubt this is her.

When it first started, it did not sound like her at all. But the end sounds so Patti.

A) That is unquestionably Patti LuPone. It just is.
B) Anyone who says it isn't doesn't know what they're talking about.
C) She is A-MAH-ZING. She out Betty Buckleys Betty Buckley if you ask me.

I wonder if this was before or after she asked Betty to stop singing Meadowlark.
Why do people INSIST upon making up lies about Patti? She never asked Betty to stop singing Meadowlark.

Take it up with Betty. She's the one who said it.
I don't want to fight with you Phyl- I don't have to.
Fact is, it was an argument over who Stephen Schwartz wrote the song for. Not over singing it.

Betty Buckley mentioned the Meadowlark story in an interview with Seth Rudetsky. from RC in Austin, Texas

Yes, it's Patti on the tape.
And while it wouldn't surprise me to hear that the story has evolved in Betty's mind into Patti telling her she's not allowed to sing "Meadowlark," I'm pretty sure lovebwy is correct (at least from what I've been told by a close friend of Patti's): LuPone asked--okay, demanded--that Buckley stop saying in concert that Schwartz wrote the song for Betty.
I'm actually not certain Betty ever said that. I've been told that she said he rewrote a certain passage (maybe skipping Patti's high note, which Buckley doesn't sing?) for her.
That sounds nothing like LuPone.
It sounds like Beechman, slightly sped up.

It's sped up, yes, but I can't see how you can't hear LuPone, particularly after the song gets going.
