She was completely nasty to me at my visit to the stage door of Gypsy. She did a terrible job the night I saw her in previews for the show. I told her she did a great job even though I was being polite when I thought the opposite.
You think she did a terrible job, yet you waited by the stage door to see her??? Ms. LuPone has always been very kind, I have several photos of us together , and she has always been gracious. Many years ago she was performing at the Donmar Warehouse in London. I couldnt believe that she remembered me from having met her a few months before. She said , You came all the way from Chicago to see me? , I am truly honored" A pretty kind person if you ask me.
She is one of the reasons I became obsessed with Broadway...obsessed enough to read message boards about her career. I am thankful for that. I think she is who she is and that's as good as she'll get. Never meet your heros.
I'm very divided on Patti. I think she sings well enough and I love the way she looks (classic, girl next door beauty). However, I do feel she is very overrated. I have heard good and bad stories about how she treats her fans and co-workers and such. She is like any other person though, we all have our good and bad days. I think people are more critical of her because they expect better from her, since she is so idolized by many people. I have met several broadway performers and they have all been nice to me, yey I've heard negative stories about them on here from other people who have met them. I often judge harshly on Patti because I hate hearing about performers being rude at the stage door. If a performer does not want to stagedoor then they shouldn't, and I don't think any less of them for it. I know Patti has a great work ethic and is a wonderful actor. But, as with any other performer, if they choose to stagedoor and then be rude to fans (and please don't say "they're just honest and not being fake", thats a load of horse poo!) I really lose respect for them. Sometimes it really is best not to meet your idols. I used to be a big Molly Ringwald fan. Then one day I met her when she was doing "Sweet Charity", and she was the rudest actor I've ever encountered at a stage door before. Just plain nasty to everyone there. Ever since then I've been more hesitant to stage door as I don't enjoy being dissapointed.

I'll chime in and say that each time I met her after SWEENEY TODD, she was nothing but gracious to me and everyone else there.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
She was perfectly nice last night at the stage door for "Gypsy." Looked very tired, as if the week/day had been rough, but kept a smile on her face and threw "Thank you"s back at everyone who paid her compliments, looking them in the eye.
I'm sure she has off days, but she seemed nice when I saw her. I think it's the eye contact that's most crucial with a performer greeting their fans. It's good to make eye contact -- of course that goes for associating with people in general.
Anyway, I'm not a huge stage door nut, but I loved her performance and thought I'd give it a go. I wasn't disappointed. Just don't go expecting a hug and a picture and a five minute conversation, and you won't be disappointed.
I was always very nervous about Patti because of all the things I'd heard. But I've met her 2 times, and she has been incredible...SPECIFICALLY after Gyspy at City Center.
I was at the Stage Door, and she came out. When she came up to me she saw that I was crying, and grabbed my hand. I then asked her for a picture, and she said "OF COURSE!" No one around me was willing to take a picture, so she MADE the lady next to me take the picture for us, and checked it after to make sure it was good. Then signed my LES MIS cd. Looked me in the eyes, wiped my tears from my face and said "Oh, you're a doll!"
I will NEVER forget that.
Now all I see are cute boys with short haircuts in a maze of their own...
I have worked with her at Lincoln Center in ANYTHING GOES, and we got along fine, but I did notice that when I came into the company everyone warned me that she was hateful. The entire ensemble HATED her. I personally don't believe there is any excuse for being rude...We all have a right to keep our dignity, and remember it's not what you say it's how you say it. She is very into playing THE STAR. I also think she is overated. It was not a happy place to be while she was there. She was replaced by Leslie Uggams and overnight the atmosphere in the theatre changed. So at least the last 10 months of the run was very happy. Leslie is a joy!
je veux te voir2, if you dont want to write in it, you don't have to. In fact, you don't even have to read it. Just ignore it, it won't hurt you, I promise.

(Tick, Tick... BOOM!)
I'll never forget a small piece in SPY magazine during the time of ANYTHING GOES.. it had an unflattering photo of LuPone and next to it was the article. The first line was...
Did you feel that huge gust of wind blowing through Broadway last week? Well we did and we can tell you it was collective sigh of relief from cast of ANYTHING GOES now that Patti Lupone has left the show.
I went on to list some her backstage antics.. none too pretty.

On a different note.. my question to the original post is what is she your role model for? How to perform on stage? How to conduct a career? How to live your life? How to dress?
I will admit that I haven't worked with her, but I know many stage managers, company managers and technicians who have and the portrait they paint is not very flattering at all. Her behavior and "requests" (i.e. demands) ranged from bizarre to downright rude.
As a stage manager I will tolerate a lot of things from an actor until they turn rude or disrespectful. There is never an excuse for that kind of behavior in my book.
It seems like everytime you turn on the T.V. or walk by a newspaper or magazine, it's chalk full of stories and pictures of could-have-been role models that have gone downhill. But Patti always manages to keep herself on track. She is my role model because of how she presents herself on stage, how she has worked so hard to get where she is and that she has her own way of doing things.
But I do have to say that you don't hear about many broadway stars going downhill. Nevertheless, she still inspires me.
---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- To everyone else who has posted their opinion,
I do understand that it would be tiring and stressful, but part of show business is treating people right. I agree with Byron Abens, and anyone else who was voicing their opinions on a similiar note.
Much thanks to everyone else who posted. Especially to Patti LuPone FANatic for being extremely polite.
---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- To dannilupone,
What's wrong with simple questions? And maybe the question is stupid, it's not the end of the world. It may seem stupid to you, but to others it may not. So, please keep that in mind and remember :
"He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever." - Chinese Proverb
When you say, "people like all of you", what makes you so sure you are so different from us? Judging by your username you are a LuPone fan too, and a potential "message board freak". So be careful with your words, and try to lighten up a bit. I'm not trying to insult you, I just don't understand why you have to come on so negetively. I'm sorry if this has offended anyone.
She is famous, for one. and for two, thats why I said you don't hear about many broadway stars going downhill. I was hinting at what you were saying, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
^she wrote in one of her 'ramblings' that she was recognized by some teenage girls in South Carolina and how during that trip she was recognized every day. That's not 'famous'?
