I’d call that an all-out rave. High marks for the direction too, which others seem to think is just fine.

‘Ragtime’ Review: Checking the Status of Our American Dream
Joshua Henry, Caissie Levy and Brandon Uranowitz lead the glorious cast of Lear deBessonet’s inspiriting Broadway revival at Lincoln Center Theater.
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/16/theater/ragtime-review-henry-debessonet.html
"while deBessonet’s “Ragtime” production for Lincoln Center Theater, which opened on Thursday night at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, has much the same glorious cast it had last fall, the cultural climate has altered its alchemy. The considerable beauty of this inspiriting show — full of complicated emotions about our diaspora nation — is streaked with melancholy."

2 1/2 stars. Doesn't like the show ("Stripping away the excesses of Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Terrence McNally’s 1996 musical amplifies its many, many flaws."), praises the cast.

America in Major and Minor Keys: Ragtime Returns
https://www.vulture.com/article/theater-review-ragtime-beaumont-lincoln-center-joshua-henry.html
"DeBessonet’s production opens schematically, with the various factions at play marching around each other. She’s a merely competent director of a large ensemble, and Ellenore Scott’s choreography, especially in a later scene at Henry Ford’s factory where people’s arms act as machinery, is overliteral. But Ragtime settles into a richer and more internal mode quickly, in a large part due to the textured performances of its leads and the thought they’ve applied to Ahrens and Flaherty’s score."
...
"High points like that, when those voices combine with James Moore’s sumptuous orchestra and crystallize into an omnisensory wallop, make this Ragtime impossible to dismiss, even if it’s awfully easy to quibble with. And I could keep quibbling"

‘Ragtime’ Review: A Stirring American Panorama on Broadway
A sterling cast makes the most of a marvelous score in Lincoln Center Theater’s admirably trenchant revival of this complex musical, set at the turn of the 20th century.

See, the difference between me and Robert Hofler is if I compared something to Spielberg's LINCOLN, it would be the highest praise!
A Spielberg RAGTIME movie would be a dream

I agree- and Hofler just seems to take it for granted that everybody feels the way he does. It’s a bizarrely mean-spirited review.

That EW review reads more like a B+ or A- grade.
Anyways, it's been a while since we've read glowing reviews like these.
It should be very hard for me to keep from shedding a tear when Henry gives his Tony acceptance speech next year. What an extraordinary talent.
Has anyone heard anything yet on when exactly the company is recording the new cast album? (Next week, perhaps?)

And not to be ageist, but him opening the review re-litigating who should've directed the 1975 film version - 50 years ago????? I mean, talk about coming in with preconceived notions...!
