Oh great. I was afraid they might actually sing the thing live as it's filmed, because, you know, this isn't just some hokey movie musical that young people will turn their noses up over. Because, you know, it's about the generation of young people. Well, the generation right before the current generation of young people, but you get my drift. Hooray! Lip-synching! Why not go all the way and hire Britney Spears for the Seasons of Love solo?
Relax, Namo. This process is hardly any different from the way Chicago was done. There are many reasons why a soundtrack needs to be recorded independent of filming, and one of them isn't that the performers won't sing during the musical numbers. Have you considered that some of the songs might need to be recorded in case there's cutting between the musical performances and montages or scenes with dialogue?

Duhhhhh, gee, Evelyn, no, golly I sure didn't think of all of those things. Derrrrrr. Duhhh, I dunno how I manage to button my underpants every morning.
Yes, Evelyn, I did think of those things. And what I think should be done is that the songs should be sung live during the filming, all the way through. Like Bette Midler did in the concert sequences of The Rose, for instance. Montaging could easily still happen. And why would creators of the movie want to go to all the trouble and expense? Because this musical, RENT, was supposed to be the one that was different. Not like the cheesy musicals with their need to suspend disbelief like all the musicals that came before it.
And yes, invoke Chicago all you want, but in order for it to work for a large audience they had to put all the numbers in the imagination of one character. Without such a gimmick for RENT, there's gonna be a lot of people unable to suspend disbelief. Live singing, on the other hand, would go a great distance toward alleviating that problem.
Why don't you just cool down and wait for the movie to come.

Wait, Is the movie going to be like the stage show? Is it going to be almost all singing? Because if it is it might be kind of annoying watching an entirly lyp synched movie...otherwise I understand why musical numbers are lyp synched
Oh my god... Jondupont said NOTHING about lip synching! Dubbing and lip synching are not synonomous. Is there some way that I can put this in bold?
No one who's posted here thus far knows anything about the proportion of dialogue to song in the screenplay.

Umm...Easy killer! And "soundtrack recording" would entail lyp synching in the shooting. Didnt say it was unusual. Just curious if anyone knew. Glad to know people dont over react (Oh, i guess there is a way to bold) Updated On: 9/27/04 at 09:42 PM
>>And "soundtrack recording" would entail lyp synching in the shooting.<<
Wrong. See Jondupont's latest post. You have been a bad boy; you did not take your Film Studies 101 course! Soundtrack recording does NOT necessarily entail lip synching.

Hope that wasnt directed towards me bc I wasnt saying that I thought it would be different actors. Not saying its a BAD thing, just IF the entire movie was singing it would get annoying watching the whole movie lyp synched. Its fine during musical numbers like hedwig and chicago--where there is dialouge in between

...And I did read his last post. There will be lyp-synching. I wasnt saying they would be lyp synching different voices but there will STILL BE lyp synching
lip syncing is almost a neccesity for filming movie songs- imagine if you will singing the hell out of a numner then being told it has to be done again due to a lighting error.. i wouldn't be too thrilled

So are they singing during filming and then replacing that with prerecorded tracks? I don't get how this works.
I expect that the final film soundtrack will be a combination of song recorded during the filming and song recorded independent of it. Movies are constructions. You cut and paste as necessary. Updated On: 9/27/04 at 10:56 PM
Alright folks.........in some cases in movie musicals the actors do sing live but majority of the time it is pre-recorded. It has been that way since the movie musical began.
Also, in a movie it is not uncommon once the movie is spliced together and the final copy is ready to have the actors go back into the studio and redub their lines. It happens more often then you think, and it doesnt nesicarily involve singing.
I realize that isnt the dubbing you are talking about, just a side comment.
oh for the love of everything that's sacred!!!!!
here kiddies is how this thing works:
they cast all the parts.
the actors go into something called a recording studio.
they record all the songs that will be used in the movie.
when they shoot the musical numbers they playback the tapes that were recorded and the actor or actress moves their lips to what they recorded in the recording studio previously.
the only time this would be different is if the actor they hired cant sing their way out of a paper bag, then what happens is that someone who can sing records the song for them and then the actor moves their lips to that other person's recording.
are we ALL CLEAR ON THIS?
HOPE SO CUZ CLASS IS DISMISSED!!!!!

Nobody is denying anything being said! What is with everyone saying the same stuff trying to prove something! All I said is that if the movie is like the stage musical and mostly music it will be weird to have an entirely lyp synched movie...Now, hopefully this thread can die
this thread will NEVER DIE CUZ I SAID SO. and besides even if RENT is completely sung thru/lip synched it wont be the first movie musical to be filmed this way. EVITA and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR were filmed the same way. Updated On: 9/28/04 at 02:27 AM
WhatDoINeed, I understand your point -- you weren't saying that lip synching is "wrong" or that this particular film would be lip synched, but rather that it would be weird if it were presented as a rock opera and you had the [inside] knowledge that none of the soundtrack was recorded at the same time as the images on screen. Makes good sense to me now that I've re-read. My apologies for any misinterpretation on my part. Now let's make out. :)
Even Catherine Zeta-Jones is a little bewildered by how dubbing works. See her interview with Larry King:
KING: Now the tricks of the trade are you singing when I see you singing or are you lip-synching to a pre-recording?
ZETA-JONES: I am lip-synching. We all recorded the soundtrack, which is remarkable, in a week. When you think of, you know, bands or recording artists take a year to record an album, we recorded it in a week, pretty much two takes were done, and the hard part was to find the character in the first few weeks of rehearsal and then just synch to it because it's in stone. You can't change it. So, it was -- that was one of the horrid mechanics of doing a musical on film.
KING: So you're actually -- are you just moving your lips?
ZETA-JONES: No, you're singing out.
KING: You're singing.
ZETA-JONES: Because you can't -- if you move your lips.
KING: There's no microphone.
ZETA-JONES: If you just move your lips there's no...
KING: But there's no microphone, right?
ZETA-JONES: No but you have to, when you sing you don't sing like that. You know your voice, your throat and your diaphragm...
KING: But it's hard to shoot isn't it? I mean it's kind of difficult?
ZETA-JONES: I just sang until I was hoarse because I was singing it straight out every time I did a take because I didn't know how else to lip-synch. I couldn't just move my lips. So, it was an experience, I'll tell you. I applaud the Golden Years of Hollywood when these kind of movies were being made...

lol, k. lets make out....lol, and its not just having the knowledge that its lyp synched its just most times you can tell....im done with this thread! :)
"LOL! Okay, let's make out. LOL! And it's not just that having the knowledge that it's lip synched; it's just that most times you can tell. I'm done with this thread!"
Wow, I haven't done that in a while. How refreshing.
WhatDoINeed and I wrapped ourselves around one another and made out at 2:41AM, per my request.
So the movie is really happening I guess. Which version of the script is it?
One written by Columbus that hasn't been reviewed yet.
