The thing with Fantasia is she appears to be too young to realise that she shouldn't be able to sing every type of music ,so each time she just goes out and brings it , there may be others with more performance experience but I've not seen who can be as jaw droppingly compelling , the girl is born to bring the house down . Her range is tremendous I suggest you find her Jay Leno rendition of "Free yourself" or her Kennedy centre honours rendition of "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" and as for holding her own with veterans in the business I suggest you take a look at her Pre Grammys duet with Chaka Khan where she most definately did not look anything like a newcomer .Unfortunately there does not seem to be any recordings of her Carnegie Hall performances of "Bridge over trouble water " and "Summertime " both reportedly spectacular

When you look at what they were looking for then there is no doubt that Tasia is the inside favorite. (except being full figured or angry)
http://www.americangospel.com/class.asp
SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLE ONLY:
EFFIE WHITE (Actress should be early-late 20's, no older). First seen in her late teens (and ages to late 20's), this vibrant young African-American woman is driven and often full of herself. Effie is the true powerhouse in the group. A soaring singer whose voice overpowers and transcends the other two girls. We are seeking all body types from 'a few extra pounds' to 'full-figured', as long as the actress embodies Effie's qualities of self-entitlement and quick anger at perceived slights. She also carries a true sense of sexuality. Effie is a true Diva which is the result of her talent, but also the makings of her downfall. Seeking a very strong actress and major singer with a huge gospel belt voice with great power and range. THIS IS A LEADING ROLE.

Seeking plus-size African American actress/singer in her early-late 20s to play the leading role of Effie White. She should have a huge gospel belt voice with great power and range. All body types welcomed!

I must say she did deserve to win over Diana Degarmo. However I thought those two as the final two was an absolute joke! Week after week much more talented women got voted off. And seriously beside the whole possible Dream Girls thing I have never ever heard any thing about her or any of her songs played on the radio or on tv! I did hear that both tylonal and Aspirin back her up because thank to her screetching, I mean singing, their migraine medicine sales have doubled!

Ahem...

"FANTASIA'S DREAM COME TRUE!

Fantasia Barrino burst into stardom in 2004 when she won the third season of American Idol. Her debut album, Free Yourself, released in the wake of that victory, sold more than 1.5 million copies. Now the 21-year-old single mother from High Point, N.C., is on the verge of making it big on the silver screen. Star has learned exclusively that Fantasia wowed executives at an audition for the star role of Effie in the movie adaptation of the Tony award-winning musical Dreamgirls, and appears on the verge of getting it.

"She blew everyone away," the source tells Star. "In the words of someone who saw the audition, it was like discovering Judy Garland. It was that good."

About three weeks ago, Barrino auditioned for screenwriter and director Bill Condon (who wrote the screenplay for Chicago) in Los Angeles. The source says before the audition, there was some resistance among people in the production who thought Fantasia might not be a big enough star for the part. But that changed after she sang Effie's signature song, "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going."

Now Fantasia is on the verge of landing what a source calls "her big break." She only needs the approval of producer David Geffen, who was one of the producers of the original Broadway show in 1981, to land the role. And by the time you read this, Geffen may well have given his blessing! "Everybody's pushing for her," the source says.
— DAVID CAPLAN

Hey theatreBOY, if for some quirky reason she doesn't get a role in Dreamgirls, you'd better believe it won't be because of any reasons you mentioned. Isimply LOVE this part...

This could work.

I really have stated a thousand times that Fantasia is perfect for Lorell. And she is. But at the same time, She could be Effie too. Margo, if you read this please pm me or post your opinion on this one, but look at this from a Bill Condon's pov:

I dont believe most of the stuff in this article because it's from a rag, but at the same time, i can believe that Fantasia wowed the auditors. She has a certain something and I trust Bill Condon's judgement because he's a fantastic director and an even more fantastic screenwriter. He has an eye for imagination and I beleive his vision for this film will be a great one.
Fantasia has the epitome of a gospel, soulful, voice. Its church trained. And I believe that's what the vision for Effie was. When Lillias White played Effie on the concert, she was great, but at the same time i didnt hear that voice that made me wanna go become a Christian. When Jennifer sings it, you hear that. because it's as she calls it, "the gift". A voice that rouses something within you. stirs the soul, as people say.
That is the kind of voice that Effie needs and the voice that Fantasia definitely posesses. The girl tears up any song she sings. Now her contrast to Beyonce is remarkable and could translate sooooooooo well on film. Like Deena, she has a waaayyyyy lighter sound that can easily translate to the opo charts. Now Fantasia, who like i said has this "through-the rafters" sound that doesnt easily translate to the pop charts as you can see with her pop sales. she killin it over on the r&b/hip hop charts because thats what we as black people love to hear. one thing ive noticed, not jus on this board but everywhere, is that a lot of races outside African American dont really care for Fantasia's voice. And I just find it so funny that Jennifer Holliday had that same luck with the recording industry. she made albums and they were good, but the pop audience jus really couldnt get down with it. the point im trying to make is, that contrast between Beyonce and Fantasia alone is remarkable and could be SOOOOOO GOOOOOD on film its not even funny. jus sit and think about how much since it would make for Curtis to change the format of the group with those two women playing the leads. and the line before Family when cc says efiie has a "special" sound. come on guys its not rocket science. like i said before, this could work.

While not critical to the plot, I still have a hard time not seeing Effie as heavier than the other girls. Just the mark that a star makes on a part I suppose.

Aren't they still holding auditions for Effie? The rumor is that Fantasia landed a part. That doesn't add to her being cast as Effie if they're still auditioning for that role.

This film will go straight to hell if Fantasia is cast as Effie Melody White.

Lol- You really have a "thing" against Fantasia.
Fantasia is an amazing powerhouse singer. I think that she would be wonderful as Effie. Ive been reading this board and I just couldnt take anymore!!! lol (To each his/her own)
Fantasia has a unique style and I personally love it. I am a huge fan of Vivian Green one of my best friends sings backup for her! and Im a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUUUUUUGE fan of the one and only baby girl AALIYAH! and I never thought Id hear myself say this but here it goes... neither viv or aaliyah would (or would have been) a good Effie. Aaliyahs voice is wayyyyy too passive and soft. (BUT BEAUTIFUL no doubt-dont get it twisted..shes my favorite) And I just couldnt imagine vivian pullin it off either. lets keep in mind that the last person to sing "And I am telling you" was Jennifer Holiday- and you think aaliyah could have stood up to that...come on!!! Fantasia is the only person I could imagine singing it. She really is a young Patti... Patti said it HERSELF! (what more do you want)

Looks like there are quite a few folks making comments that have never even seen the Broadway Musical "Dreamgirls".

The very first scene in "Dreamgirls" is a talent show... or actually a early 1960s The Apollo Theater Talent Contest, Act I Scene I, where the Dreamettes, green from Chicago, eager and wide eyed sing the song "Move (You're Steppin' On My Heart)" and lose their first bid for fame.

Probably only a very small handfull of singers have the chops to sing the lead on this type of song (on a Jennifer Holliday level) so casting should not really be all that difficult.

"Move (You're Steppin' On My Heart)"

Move, Move, Move right out of my life
Move, Move, Move right out of my life
You better move
(move)
Ya Steppin on my heart
I said move
(move)
Ya tearin it apart
Please move
(please move)
Ow what am I gonna do
My heart
(my heart)
mmmmm breakin breakin up over you
(breakin breakin up over you)

You are so horribly satanic the way you lead me around
I feel just like the Titanic I'm always going Down Down Down Yeah ah
Move move ya steppin on my style
(steppin on my style)
Move move I want to breathe so loud
Move move move right out out of my life
Oh Baby
Get outta my life theres too much fuss and strife
So why dont you pack it up get movin, take a cab to acapulco,
take a broken down car
just move right out of my
move right out of my Life
Please move move move move
Please move move move move

========================
I say let the original cast reminisce and view all the top audition tapes and make a collective public statement on who they think should get the remaining lead roles.

If Fantasia gets the part of Elfie..........DVD will be the only place I watch this movie. I am sorry to be like that, but I can't STAND Fantasia to begin with and she is all wrong for the part. Elfie needs someone who can belt it like a motha' and stand out from all of the other dreams. All Fantasia would do was cry that she got kicked out and scream her songs like she always does. Please let this be a joke.
