"I don't know if its possible royalty wise"
Of course it's possible. It's the beauty of Mechancial Liscences for DPD and CD production.
the beauty of copyrighting and ownership!

"am I the only one who wants a cd of this show?"

If a show that closed after a few weeks can get one, this one should definitely have it. I want to walk out of there with a nice CD and listen to it on my way home.

Posted: 3/6/09 at 6:15pmI definitely want one, if only for the mashups they do... I made an IMEEM playlist with all the original versions of the songs featured in the show, and while its great, its not the same...

I want one too!
Jason-I haven't heard of anyone who didn't like this show.
It's going to be a big hit.

Posted: 3/6/09 at 8:45pmI don't know-I kind of think that 80's music is more of a nationally known and loved genre, and definitely not esoteric.

The only thing that will be "bombed" here is the obnoxious audience, getting served drink after drink because the only way to enjoy this crap is to be in a state of complete intoxication.
Ah, Broadway is SO classy these days!!

"Story of My Life" is getting a cast recording and I'd like to think ROA has a *bit* better chance of survival, so my money's on there being a cast recording.

Posted: 3/6/09 at 9:15pmI think it has more to do with royalties and fees because of the type of show.

Royalties and fees?
Alright, well it costs (on average) about $15 to obtain a MCL for each song and then, if they work out a deal at the statutory rate with each ownership, 9.1 cents of each track (of each sold album) goes to the deemed authors/owners of each song.
So it's not THAT much...
#17re: Rock of Ages Cast Recording?
Posted: 3/6/09 at 9:35pmThe cost of making the recording would be in the upper hundreds of thousands.

Posted: 3/6/09 at 10:49pmThis is not even a musical. It's an annoying rock concert that has somewhat of a predictable plotline to it. This doesn't deserve to be in a broadway theatre.

snarkywannabedreamer, no, actually - I happen to be quite intelligent :)
And if it gets rave reviews, I shall eat my hat officially here upon the board.
Pass the salt.

"This doesn't deserve to be in a broadway theatre."
I think it does. I've seen so much bad theater on broadway, that in comparison, ROA ranks pretty high.

I think this show is going to be even better than the off-BW version. No way is it a bomb, unless you're saying, "It's the bomb!" as a compliment.
I think ROA will attract a lot of tourists, too, because everyone loves and knows the music and it's a fun night. It's also not going to cost an arm and a leg for tix. That, in itself, is going to be a deciding factor on which show people go to see.
I can't wait for a cast recording. I hope they can swing it.
I get to see it in just two weeks!!

Posted: 3/7/09 at 12:54amA lot of Off-Broadway shows venture into the land if BROADWAY and get swallowed by it.
#24re: Rock of Ages Cast Recording?
Posted: 3/7/09 at 1:53amI forsee the show selling very well, in this economy folks like things that are safe and familiar, and given the list of artists on the show poster (and the relatively cheaper ticket pricing) this has "Tourist Goldmine!!!!" written all over it.
