Roundabout and the ART will Bring 1776 Back to Broadway

I don’t want to wait until 2021! I hope that Santino Fontana can bring his brilliant John Adams to Broadway, though.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

I wonder if this will be an all female production. That's been a bit of a trend lately with this show and I can imagine that it would lead to some interesting casting.

Weird they’d announce this before they announce *any* of their Broadway season for 19-20, which will be starting in just a few months now.

When do they normally announce a new season? Seems like it'd be about time to right now. With Kiss Me Kate and All My Sons both wrapping up at the end of next month.

It depends. They announced True West last March and Bernhardt/Hamlet last April. But considering they are built on subscriptions, it makes it harder to sell or to get people to renew when they don't know what they're paying for.

I saw a great production at Porchlight in Chicago where the cast was racially and gender diverse throughout. They were all in modern clothing except for the final scene.

It was brilliant!

If this was an all-woman cast, I feel as though that would have been specifically mentioned.

Mike Barrett wrote: "I'm not as familiar with the show like some of you may be, but who should we be looking for to be cast for this? Male or female?"

Patti LuPone as Joan Adams and Mary Testa as Benita Franklin?

Seriously, though, I hope they stick with more conventional casting for this one.

I feel like a subscription house where many of the buyers are already in place is a smart move here

I couldn’t imagine this being a full commercial production going up against Hamilton, considering this is in many ways a spiritual predecessor since it follows the same timeline and the casting for this show usually steers overwhelmingly white, which might turn off theatergoers who aren’t interested in seeing that

1776 is a better show than Hamilton. I’m much more invested in the characters in 1776 than I am in Hamilton and it was ballsy to write a musical where at one point you go over thirty minutes without a song.

This may have to do with the Ahmanson.  It is hemorrhaging subscriptions because next year’s announced shows are pretty weak.  This is the “to be announced” final show of the season and they are using it to woo back subscribers.

I won't hold my breath for this to actually materialize at Ahmanson, as they have announced several shows I got super excited about over the last few years, only to cancel them.

I remember seeing Will Roland mention in interviews that he would love to be in 1776 at some point - do you think he'd leave BMC for this?  It wouldn't be unlike him to leave a show in favor of a coming-to-Broadway production - after all, it's exactly what he did going from DEH to BMC.  However, he seems to have a more intimate connection to BMC, having worked with Joe Iconis many times before.  What do you guys think?

Quite generous to think that Be More Chill will still be open in a year or two years.

Even if Roland did leave BMC, it would likely be AFTER his contract runs out. An actor goes where the work is. That being said, I can't think of a role he's right for.

Cant wait for this....will be catching this at the ART!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I know it couldn't possibly happen now that William Daniels is in his 90s and essentially retired except for book-signing appearances, but I'd love to see the original John Adams as Benjamin Franklin, or maybe as Stephen Hopkins, the other "oldest man in Congress."  Even just as a guest in one performance would be wonderful.

Snarky!!  You do remember that the Roundabout is non-profit, so no one is benefiting from the Broadway prices.  The ability to charge Broadway prices -- and remember that their subscribers receive sizable discounts -- are one of the reasons they remain viable.
