Let me say, I don't have any hatred for this show. I've yet to see all of it. I am just massively underwhelmed from every bit I do see."
I was there last night. I watched the press clip of the opening number that was released.
I can tell you this much, the video is NOTHING like the love experience and energy. I felt similar after seeing the Fallon clip before attending the show. The show was maybe the most fun 80 minutes (90 with the technical pause!) I’ve had in a theater, and I’ve seen just about every musical that’s ran on Broadway since 2017…
My friend saw the show in London where it had been running a while, and said there were super fans who were singing along loudly (until the ushers stopped them) or trying to do the choreo while standing in their seat.
I’m sure some of the opening night energy will die down, but this is a show that will attract some unique or non-theater fans (like Colleen in Waitress?) who don’t know or follow the typical etiquette rules.
The particular gir screaming for Abby in that video was terrible on video, not as bad in the theater (if you weren’t sitting near her at least!)…
Here’s the thing, and I know it’s gonna piss some people off. If you choose to go to a performance of a show like this, on a night like this, you have to expect it. Do I like the screaming? God, no. Do I find it obnoxious and rude to the cast/audience? Absolutely, I do. But that’s why I no longer attend final performances, that I used to love going to. Because the kids (mainly) need to make the show all about them by being that loud. And until there’s a shift in what’s accepted at the theatre, that’s going to continue.
Before even stepping foot in the theater last night I told myself (the same with “Wicked” on Tuesday) that I was just going to enjoy being back and not let the audience reaction get to me. Anyone who went to this show last night and expected a calm audience of respectful light clapping and maybe an occasional “hoot or holler” really deluded themselves. Especially for a show like this that’s presented as a concert - this is what’s going to happen.
OMG, that’s the girl I was sitting near. I expected an overly enthusiastic audience of course, but her screeching was really jarring and made me jump more than once.
And yea, I don’t think it will always be like last night but the show definitely seems to have a large very enthusiastic young fan base so I just think that will be the atmosphere. The concert framing doesn’t help. Did I read that in London they had some sing-a-long nights?
Also forgot to add that along with the playbills thy give out pins that say “SIX Rule Your World September 17,2021”

I know it wasn’t really your point, but that’s 1000% just a result of bad parents. Many children are perfectly behaved, that’s just a symptom of the theaters not having the guts to actually remove people when necessary
I agree with every word of your 2 paragraph post, Jordan. Six and Hadestown were the shows my son and I picked to see as our first back next month - because of their energy. We've seen them both, and love them.

I wouldn’t go that far, soul lol. It’s a result of environment and what’s become acceptable behavior. If the people causing all the noise were there with their parents I might agree with you but it’s mainly younger people with their friends.

It will. These first performances are extremely unique and I've been to 3 of them specifically for this reason. And I guess we will agree to disagree whether an audience vocally supporting a show performing for the first time in 18 months due to a horrific global pandemicis "totally obnoxious."
There's a recording of Defying Gravity on YouTube from Wicked's 2nd night back. The audience is enthusiastic but it's nowhere near the reaction from the first night."
For goodness’ sake, no one is saying people shouldn’t cheer, but, in the video from last night, there’s onegirl screaming bloody murder during the middle of the song whenever Abby Mueller starts singing. No one else in the audience making a peep, and then there’s this blood-curdling scream. Not only is it obnoxious, but inconsiderate."
Agree 100%! We want to see this show but if last's night behaviour is any indication how the audience will be and yes I get it as it was the 1st show back after the Pandemic but come on people...we'll have to hold off as I would not be able to enjoy it! The non stop screaming is for what!? The screeching outbursts are obnoxious-disrespectful to the others in the audience. Yes, it's a concert style show but you can still enjoy without all that crap! Hopefully future audiences will be more chill yet enthusiastic!

Sunday in the Park with George
Went last nite and omg it was spectacular. I agree with an earlier post the energy of being there is incomparable. The cast was on fire and the audience was so excited and very respectful. What-an-experience!!
Went to today's mat and it surprised me how not-overly-intense the crowd was. Extended applause after each song, yes, but I seemed to observe less audience disruption today than when I saw it in February 2020. The only thing that was ear-piercing was the all-audience synchronized clapping during the final song. I appreciated people keeping the beat but the volume levels of vocal + music were already pretty high and the clapping still has my ears recovering.
I wonder how the reviews will be for this one. No doubt Jesse Green will give a rave, because he loved it in Chicago and the show hasn’t changed that much since.

I'm curious whether the reviewer are coming again or if they are going to to stick with what they filed last March.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I caught the Sunday afternoon and Wednesday night's performances(I got a little enthusiastic on ticket buying when they announced their return!) performance and both times the audience has been enthusiastic, but respectful.
This cast has really jelled so nicely! I think its a great show to have on Broadway.
