Way too early, I know, but what do you think are the chances of any of the SIX ladies at grabbing a nomination? In a show that is ultimately all about ensemble, I'm genuinely curious which, if any, of the six queens  the show would throw their Tony campaign dollars behind. Obviously this is gonna be a crowded year, so I imagine competition will be stiff (and let's face it, no matter what it's probably Patti's to loose) but in my heart of hearts I would love to see Abby Mueller or Anna Uzele walk away with a nom. Or are the parts too small? Thoughts?

All six were nominated together for Featured Actress in a Musical at the 2019 Oliviers, losing to LuPone.

If anything, at the Tonys they will most likely be honored with a special Tony, like the four Matildas. No nominations after the Billy Elliot backlash.

Doubtful (imo) because those were children, not adults.   I think it will be hard for enough nominators to nominate one or two.

I know the Oliviers nominated them together, but why would the Tonys do so? Unlike Matilda and Billy Elliot, they're not playing the same character and alternating performances. They're six different characters with different songs. I do think they'll manage a nomination or two, at this early point in the season, anyway.

The Tonys can no longer nominate multiple people for one award, after the BILLY ELLIOT situation. They would have to give them a special award and disqualify them from the category.

The ladies are universally strong. I really don't see any one getting nominated over the others.

I think you'll get one of the queens nominated, a la Jenn Colella in Come From Away, or Elizabeth A. Davis in Once and it will be a symbolic for the whole class.

I don't foresee a "group" nomination although the Skinner/Ripley were jointly nominated for Side Show but that was ... a while ago.

Wouldn't they all be slotted as "featured' first - so not in competition with Lupone, whose name is above the title? So, it would be up to the producers to elevate one of the queens.

My personal favorite is Brittney Mack as Cleves. She elevates Get Down to a "can't miss" number.

As others have said, there’s no need to bring group nominations into the conversation. It’s a done deal: the Tonys are no longer allowing them – full stop. The Oliviers are notorious for playing fast and loose with eligibility, and constantly do weird, unsual things like that. We can’t use them as a point of comparison for the Tonys in cases like this.

I’m assuming all 6 actors will go into the supporting category, as that’s usually what the Tonys do with true ensemble shows. Sometimes ensemble shows will make a bid to bump one 1 or 2 of their performers up to lead, but there’s no case for that with Six. And in the absence of that kind of campaign, they’ll almost certainly all go supporting.

I can imagine a scenario where they get special Tonys, because it’s an unusually difficult situation as far as choosing actors to nominate. But yeah, they usually reserve those special Tonys for people/shows that aren’t eligible in normal competition.

LuPone will no doubt be petitioned to Featured, like many above-the-title supporting players before her.

Yeah sure -- and if history has taught us ANYTHING, it's that once the Tonys create a rule -- it NEVER changes!

A lot of industry people were pissed off at the BILLYs win, which is why the rules were changed. They viewed it as an award for the character, not the actors, which is valid. It leaves way too much "grey area," and gives the people in that category a leg up.

SIX would be quite different, being that they are 6 different characters. I really do not think we will see a return to grouping people into one category...you would get way too many people trying to abuse that in the future. The Oliviers have always been looser than the Tonys and, frankly, less prestigious.

But wouldn't it already have to have been changed? The season has already started.

LuPone is above the title but there’s no way she’s not campaigned into supporting where she’ll win.

It is all going to depend on how the rest of the season rolls out but as others have said, there is no way they would be nominated as a group and also no way any of them would be bumped up to lead. Of the 6 of them, I would think the actresses with the BEST chances of filling out the category would be Mack for her comedy chops in her song or Pauly for her dramatic turn in the later half of her song. It would not be the first time a featured performer was nominated on the merits of one showstopping number but if and when any of them are nominated, it will not matter much going up against Lapone. It will just be an honor to be nominated for any of them.

As a general rule of thumb, I hate group nominations. ''Six's'' best bet is hoping the six women are collectively given a non-competitive Tony Honor for Excellence. That's what they did with the four girls from ''Matilda'' (2013 ) and the principals of ''La Boheme'' (2002 ) and the revival cast of ''Big River'' (2003 ). I'll never understand why the Tonys broke precedent and allowed the three boys from ''Billy Elliot'' to share one slot for Best Actor in a Musical (and win).

Still, the wackiest group nomination in Tony history is from 1960. They nominated all 7 children from ''The Sound of Music'' for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, even though two of the kids were boys!

It seems unfair to make the ladies compete against each other, especially since all of them are pretty perfect and it would therefore be more of the “role” being nominated...although that’s basically all acting awards.

Mack has the most “buzz,” although I think Pauly is the most memorable. Again, her role has the biggest arc, unlike say Mueller who is great but doesn’t have as meaty a role.

Carmen Cusack could win for Flying Over Sunset.

Making them compete against each other would also kind of destroy the whole point of the show, which is for them NOT to compete against each other. It would be pretty meta if they all ended up competing against each other for a Tony win.

While I did like Mack and Pauly is a personal favorite, I thought Anna Uzele had a good amount of dramatic heft to her role as well. The other queens are fairly one note (up until the second half of All You Wanna Do) but her character is the first to become fully formed (though the script helps her out there).

I love following awards like the Tonys and the Oscars, but situations like this are a good reminder that, when all is said and done: these awards are not built on fairness. They're subjective, they're political, and they're only designed to recognize an extremely narrow sliver of what theatre actually is and can be. And yes, they're often antithetical to what the actual itself art is about. Art pieces that critique elitism win awards from the most elitist awards bodies. Art pieces that critique capitalism win awards from the most capitalist of awards-bodies. It's a tale as old as time.

Six was not written with acting awards in mind - nor should it have been, for the exact reason you gave. It's not fair that shows rely on the Tonys to sell tickets, when the Tonys themselves are so out-of-touch with the art form they claim to celebrate. But the good news is that the creators of Six wrote the show how they wanted to write it - not to rake in acting awards. The show is all the better for it, and people are responding to it positively.

The art should define the awards, not the other way around.

^agreed.

Like someone else mentioned here, Six isn’t the kinda show that will need a Tony to sell tickets. While it may help to get its reach to an older generation, the people who want to see it most likely already have plans to. I just hope they don’t price out their younger fans.

I think Lighting, Consume, Best Musical, and score Nominations are in the bag with them winning at least one.

I’d be VERY surprised if any of the girls got nominated for Best Leading Actress. I’m not sure how the Tony voters would even determine that tbh

I should’ve been Blac Chyna.

Is it just me, or do I think the lighting design was a bit too tame at times during SIX? Truth be told, I've been to pop concerts with more intense lighting, and I was kinda expecting that sort of thing. Think all-out, go-for-broke, Great Comet-esque strobes during the choruses of "Haus of Holbein," for example. Something that could easily cause seizures and epilepsy attacks if people are not warned beforehand.

The lighting does improve quite a bit as the show goes on, though.

Just for the record: ''Six'' was nominated for 5 Olivier Award nominations in 2019: Best Musical, Best Supporting Actress (for all 6 women), Best Achievement in Music, Best Theatre Choreography and Best Costume Design. And ''Six'' was shut out of any wins. ''Come From Away'' beat it for Best Musical. Best Music and Choreography. Patti LuPone from ''Company'' won for Supporting Actress. And ''The King and I'' won for Best Costumes.

While I love Six, the most likely scenario is a CFA type situation. One or two of the queens gets a supporting nod, but it's not a meaty enough role to win anything.
