Caught Mexodus this week and honestly had one of the best theatre experiences I’ve had in a long time. The creativity on display is unreal — the way they layer live looping, vocals, and instruments to build the soundscape is mesmerizing, and the mix of hip hop, gospel, folk, and Mexican music is so fresh and satisfying.
What impressed me most was how much they could do with so little - a couple of performers, some sound effects, lighting, and suddenly you’re completely transported into different worlds and moments. The story itself is powerful and eye-opening, about a history I hadn’t been taught, and it really hit me.

Their other post was about Exorcistic, not Mexodus.

Saw this today and was really, really impressed. The whole conceit aside, it’s also a really well-crafted piece of theater. It’s a rollicking 90 minutes that knows exactly when to slow things down and when to speed things up, featuring two endlessly energetic performers. I hope there’s a future for it, but it’s currently the perfect fit for the Minetta Lane. One of the better things I’ve seen all year, honestly.
I concur with the high praise. I saw it last night and it’s truly (bleep) amazing what these two man and their mixers are able to accomplish musically and as a feat of storytelling. They said that the audience was free to engage in the space (yell, clap, etc) as they felt it but I think the audience was restrained in that they didn’t want to ruin the looping and were enamored with it.
I used a discount code COMM20 to get 3rd row orchestra aisle for $46.50, but I think it doesn’t work with the extension. Honestly, this show falls under the “off-Broadway is eating Broadway’s lunch” category. Go go go go go.
I wish it would extend for another couple of weeks. Hopefully it will return somewhere.

Wow, wow, wow. I saw this tonight and it’s the best thing I’ve seen in a long time. Incredible storytelling. It works so well in the intimate theatre. I’m telling everyone I know to try to catch it this month.

I didnt love the structure here-- the 4th wall history lessons on either end were tired-- but i cant remember the last time i saw such an explosion of talent rocket off a stage like this. Both Brian Quijada and Nygel Robinson have etched themselves in my mind-- Quijada so effortlessly likable and deeply engaging, Robinson singing better than anyone I've heard in a long while. Really remarkably talented people telling a fascinating slice of history.
If it develops further, I hope they bulk up the story of Henry and Carlos--maybe adding more about what happened to the Carloses and the Henrys of that time. I didnt need the first and last 5 minutes, but the middle 80 minutes are damn powerful. I assume Audible has plans to release this but seeing it live---and on closing night downtown--was a thrill.
Sadly missed this, does anybody know if this has a future?

It’s just been announced for the Pasadena Playhouse in July.
