For Director Trevor Nunn in 2006, per an announcement at the Sondheim CHILDREN AND ART celebration.
Assuming she has that kind of voice, I'd also like to nominate her as a potentially perfect Nellie Forbush in a Broadway revival of SOUTH PACIFIC.

Hell, I'll see it.
What? A Maria the right age for the part? Quite miraculous. Well, maybe not from Mr. Nunn, who cast the wonderful (and young!) Lauren Kennedy in his version of South Pacific (the London Cast Recording of that is the best I've ever heard of that show). Assuming that Scarlett can sing, she could be quite good as Maria. We in the U.S. will probably get Glenn Close as Sister Maria (in the tradition of her Geriatric Nellie Forbush on ABC).

You mean "Nellie Graybush?" :)
I have no idea if she can sing or not but I can definitly see the possibilities. I'll be very interested to see how this turns out.
Lauren Kennedy was miraculous as Nellie. Such pitch-perfect casting.

Why, thank you kangaroo. He *is* a good-looking lad, no?
Most definitely... especially in the last scenes of LOTR: ROTK. He looked like one FINE hobbit specimen...

I'm gonna agree with most of the people here. If she can sing, she would be wonderful as Maria. She is a great actress, and she would bring the right mixture of spunk and passion to Maria. Not to mention she is the perfect age to play Maria
She bores me to death. Though THANK HEAVENS she's age appropriate.
I think this could work! I wish I could see it.
Eh. Not sure if I like the idea. If she's a good singer then thats certainly good. It could be much worse.
I dunno theres something about her I don't like, not sure what it is. Just me being weird likely...
haha yes, very nice icon Rose. Hot hobbit walking....*shows lord of the rings geekiness proudly*

Is Maria really supposed to be 20 (Scarlett is surprisingly young)? I mean if Liesel is 16 going on 17, then its fairly creepy to have Maria and the Captain fall in love. That aside I think Scarlett Johanssen is a fantastic film actress (maybe the best of the current batch of early 20s starlets) and if she can sing, I think she will be great.

I didn't know she could sing, but please tell me they won't change any of the keys for songs if she can't. That's a classic and if she can't do it's oroginal score, it should be re-cast. I hope she can sing it though.

It would be stretch to imagine her as a virginal nun, but that's what acting is about I guess. Anne Hathaway would be fantastic.
And love YOUR icon kangaroo.
I like Scarlet a lot as an actress, since she not only can act, but is very indie chic in real life. Then again, Maria is a large singing part, and I honestly have no idea on my opinions.
I will have to hear her before I can judge whether she is good or not. Clearly she was picked for the role though, so she must be able to sing something.

Although we really do NOT need a new production of this, it could turn out to be a great casting choice.
Well Maria ISN'T a virginial nun; thats part of the reason she leaves the Abbey.
