Seeing a show the day of the Tony Awards?
#0Seeing a show the day of the Tony Awards?
Posted: 5/6/06 at 7:34pmI might be in the city the weekend that the awards are being held. Would actors who are nominated be in the day of the awards, or would I get understudies?

Posted: 5/6/06 at 7:37pmThere is usually very few shows that have a performance the day of the awards, but if they do, then you'll most likely have the understudy of the actor nominated.

I saw Cabaret the day of the Tony Awards in 1998 and I had full cast.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 7:44pmThere is a possibility they perform a matinee and the awards are later on the same night.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 7:48pmI'd really like to see Sweeney Todd, and they have a 2PM show that day.

I would think Sweeney would give you the largest likelyhood for having full cast due the changes that are required when a lead is out although you never really know.
It seems that if they are having a show that day they would expect the principles to be in.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 8:02pmA lot of shows have matinees the day of the Tonys. And it's unusual for someone to miss that day.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 8:15pmIn the Broadway.com videos they always talk about how they had shows that day.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 8:23pmI don't even understand the question. Why would they miss an afternoon show for an evening awards ceremony? They're nominated because they're in a show...

Posted: 5/6/06 at 8:36pmI think he meant in case the show and the ceremony happened at the same time, and it has been the case in years past - so, it would be an understudy in this case, although I doubt a show with major nominations would perform at the same time the awards are on, but I'm sure it has happened.
#11re: Seeing a show the day of the Tony Awards?
Posted: 5/6/06 at 8:39pmThat would make sense in context, but I doubt it would happen nowadays.
#12re: Seeing a show the day of the Tony Awards?
Posted: 5/6/06 at 8:45pmI'm sure there are producers who would like to take advantage of the fact that almost no one else is having a show at a time.

It makes more business sense for them to have their nominated actors at the Tonys than to schedule a show for their off-night - many more people will see that than would be in the audience for one show.

I'm seeing the 2:00 pm matinee of PAJAMA GAME on 11 June.
I remember that on the day of the TONYs, THE BOY FROM OZ cancelled its matinee ( or did not schedule one) maybe because Hugh was going to be the host of the show and needed time for rehearsals.

Silly me! I booked a holiday and a ticket for Spelling Bee on Sunday evening before I realised it was the Tony Awards. Seeing as its from last season I suppose it will be a full cast?
Oh and what are the chances of there being a fabulous bar downtown that will be showing the Awards?

Posted: 5/6/06 at 9:25pmIt depends mrkingas, sometimes they do a montage with past nominees who are currently performing, so you might not get the full cast.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 10:43pmI'm seeing the Threepenny Opera matinee. My friend got the ticket, and it didn't occur to me that it's the day of the Tonys.

Posted: 5/7/06 at 12:26amI saw the matinee of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels the day of the Tony Awards last year and there wasn't anyone out that day. not even in the ensemble. after "Dirty Rotten Number" the audience gave a standing ovation and Norbie made some joke about needing to get to the Tonys on time and then the show resumed, and the cast was all present and accounted for at the stage door for a few minutes after to sign autographs. even Joanna Gleason.

Posted: 5/7/06 at 12:37amI was at that performance too! The day before I got so sick of losing the lottery for the millionth time that I just gave in and bought a ticket in the last row of the mezzanine. I loved it! The audience was so excited! We stopped the show! And then we went home to watch the same actors we saw that afternoon went on to perform at the tony awards. A very cool experience!

IF the cast are performing a Sunday matinee the day of the Tonys you will likely get the full cast and an extra buzz about the performance.
The Tony dress rehearsal is Sunday afternoon BUT casts that are doing matinees that day can come and do their number in the morning. They record the audio and run it (for timing reasons) with various fill in people trying to mimic the performance. (I saw the dress in 1990 - it was a hoot watching a few clutzy stage managers trying t do the taps for "Banjos" in the MEET ME IN ST LOUIS routine - they had a Sun matinee. Fortunately the casts of both GRAND HOTEL and CITY OF ANGELS were there live for the dress.)
Even more exciting is to catch the winning show the night after the awards. I had lucked out getting comps to TITANIC lined up for the Monday night after the '97 Tonys. I also caught the Best Play that year, LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO at the Sunday matinee and again all the cast were there giving their all.
No matter what, the whole week before/week after the Tonys is always an exciting time to be in NYC.
I can't be there this year - have a family wedding on Saturday the 10th, but I'll be home watching CBS (and taping it - you can be sure of that.)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Just don't expect to get autographs from a cast that is going to be doing a matinee and then attending the Tonys. They get ready at the theatre most likely and need to hurry out in most cases. You are welcome to stand outside and see them in their outfits, but they may not sign and who can blame them? It's JUNE lol.
