Was just going down a YouTube rabbit hole of the divine Sherie Rene Scott and was reminded of something I’ve always wondered about. Why was Sherie not nominated for anything that awards season for her performance in Aida? I wasn’t really on the scene at the time and did not see any of the shows that season live. But Sherie’s performance seems so well loved and remembered and it’s such a great role. It just seems so bizarre for her not to get in anywhere. Does anyone who was around at the time have any insight? I assume she was in Featured, but I can’t find confirmation of that.

She is one of our greatest vocalists and a fantastic actress. She really deserved a Tony for Everyday Rapture. One of my very favorites.

I’d love to see her play The Witch one day.

That season was the year I had to do a Speaking course for my senior year of high school and I focused it all on the Tony Nominations and how Everyday Rapture should have been nominated for Best Musical.

And with Lindsay Mendez and Betsy Wolfe doing back-up vocals:

Gayest post of the month and it’s only the 10th. So proud!

I'm trying to find out what category Sherie ended up being eligible for, but according to a NYPost article, Disney wanted her in featured, and nobody was above the title. From April 2000, "Meanwhile, Disney is asking that Sherie Rene Scott, one of the stars of “Aida,” be put up in the Featured Actress in a Musical category. The reason is simple: Heather Headley, another “Aida” star, has a lock on the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical."

It was also a pretty controversial year regarding Contact being a musical or not. They did not seem to love Aida as you can see from it not being nominated for Best Musical. Ultimately, it seems as if they just loved Contact and Swing and then Eartha Kitt got a (probably deserved) legacy nomination.

I adored Sherie in Aida and Everyday Rapture but let us not forget how terrific she was in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She absolutely should have been nominated for Aida. She did get nominated for featured for Scoundrels but Victoria Clark won it for Piazza that year.

After The Lion King's upset win for Best Musical, there seemed to be a bit of a backlash when Aida came out two years later hence the underwhelming number of nominations. There seemed to be immediate backlash to the backlash though when Aida won four of its five nominations and it probably would have won Best Musical had it been nominated. I'm surprised Sherie didn't get in over one of the Swing! actresses (Laura Benanti & Ann Hampton Callaway) but I think maybe it was part of general disdain for the show from the nominators.

There were also major issues with Aida prior to its Broadway engagement. The Alliance premiere was universally panned, leading to half the show being rewritten. Then in Chicago, the set malfunctioned and both Heather Headley and Adam Pascal were injured. So by the time it arrived in New York, there was already all sorts of negative buzz surrounding it. Then add in the backlash to Lion King winning 2 years prior, and it makes sense that the Tony nominators chose to recognize other shows instead. And Sherie Renee Scott I'm afraid was just part of the collateral damage.

It was actually the leading category. I thought Sherie would win best book for Everyday Rapture and she should have won best actress instead of Zeta-Jones, who I found mediocre.
Can we please get a Last 5 Years reunion concert with her and Norbert? No one will ever do it better (than that).

I remember seeing a documentary where they explained that she was actually fired from the show Aida before the Broadway run because the producers and director couldn't see it working with her and wanted to go in a different direction with Amneris. Then there were some more troubles with the show and they brought her back in at the last moment. I don't remember all the exact details but it didn't feel like the production was very welcoming to her.

Their Stars In the House episode very much gave the impression they were all thankful for the show but that it was a very intense process. Got the vibe they felt a little at sea. Which I guess kinda makes sense? The show was having so much structural and technical trouble the actors probably got a bit lost in that shuffle.

Did she retire?  Where has she been?

Edit;  I forgot she did Little Shop.
