Sir Ian McKellan wants to be in a musical.

He'd be amazing as King George in Hamilton!
It would get me back to see it again.
it would indeed be amazing but he did say "star in" and the King is not a "starring" role.
What are good musical roles for a man over 80 with a somewhat limited vocal range?
Taking the definition of "star" liberally, he'd be kind of a waste as Merlyn or Mr. Lundie or Finian or Joe Waitress. Is there a male equivalent of Mrs. Higgins or Madame Armfeldt?

He'd be a great Starkeeper in Carousel.
Ok, stay with me here:
Ian McKellen as Henry Higgins
Audra McDonald as Eliza
Andre de Shields as Alfred Doolittle
Keep the 2018 revival's ending. And change the script to make Mrs. Higgins Henry's sister instead of mother.
Yes, I'm doing some gymnastics to make it plausible. But come on! Sir Ian McKellen as Henry Higgins!

My first thought was honestly genderbend Madame Armfeldt for him. Imagine an Ian Mckellan/Audra Mcdonald little night music. Or really any other big names they could get for Deisiree.

I always thought it would be cool if PBS did a documentary series following a famous actor doing cameos in 8 different Broadway shows in one week. McKellan would be great. I thought Meryl would be good, too.

It wouldn’t be the usual interpretation, but I think the Emcee being a louche “dirty old man” with a patina of sophistication might actually work extremely well. And it’s an easy sing in the current version.

Sir Ian as "Sir" in ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE SMELL OF THE CROWD, with Charlie Stemp as "Cocky"

How about the narrator/Mysterious Man?

That's a GREAT idea. Or Daniel Radcliffe or Ethan Slater.

Nope. Without Charlie it's no deal. We need him back on Broadway and I'm stocking up with English breakfast beans to give him a proper welcome when he returns.
