So I just got back from seeing Hairspray, and OMG, that movie was THE SH*T. Perfect songs, consistently strong cast, costumes, everything was A+++. Back when I saw it, I thought Dreamgirls was fabulous, but this is really how a movie musical is done. It was so much more fun, and touched on similar issues in way more clever and entertaining ways. The switch from the white girls to the black girls in "New Girl in Town"? So much more clever than "Cadillac Car". But even without the comparisons, it was just such a great movie. I haven't had so much fun at the movies in a LONG time. Ten million people have probably already said this, but I think this has the potential to be the new Grease. Sorry Dreamgirls, but Hairspray just pwned d'ya!
And yes I know, there are a million topics on this but, whatever. I need all the attention, so I'll make my own thread :P.
Well since Dreamgirls was devised from the start as Oscar bait, I'd say it actually came up short. Hairspray seems like it just wants to be a good FUN movie, and the general consensus is that it succeeds.
hmmm, yeah, try saying that when this movie gets NO major category award nominations.
Someone could get a supporting nod. It's not like Dreamgirls was nominated for Best Picture. Or Best Director. Or Best Actor. Or best - how many MAJOR category award nominations did Dreamgirls actually get?

This is silly. Two great movies that had great success. Why try to compare them? They are not in the same year to compare them Academy Award wise so even if Hairspray gets more, it could mean this movie year is weak or the fact that Dreamgirls was the most nominated film of last year could mean last year was weak. Either way just be happy movie musicals are getting a chance. The last thing I would think was logical was to compare these extremely diffrent films.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

Funny Face - your thoughts are on par with that of an ignoramus. Are you serisouly comparing "New Girl In Town" to "Cadalliac Car?" Did you seriously just say that HAIRSPRAY was more fun than DREAMGIRLS?
News flash: DREAMGIRLS is a drama and HAIRSPRAY is a comedy. I would hope HAIRSPRAY would be more fun! If you think "And I Am Telling You" is supposed to be a fun time - you need to reevaluate which films and shows you decide to spend your money on.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I think HAIRSPRAY Disney-fies what DREAMGIRLS so clearly depicts... not to mention that in HAIRSPRAY the people of colors are the supporting characters and DREAMGIRLS puts them front and center, wonder why one film is being received better than the other....
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Well then maybe "fun" was the wrong word, but even a drama is supposed to be entertaining, and I found Hairspray to be immensley more entertaining than Dreamgirls. But sorry that gets you so riled up...
And yes, I did compare those two songs because the make pretty much the same point and are presented similarly on film.
May I ask, what do you think of Chicago compared to Dreamgirls?
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
But seriously, if anyone would have told me a year ago I'd say that Hairspray was the better film I would have thought they were crazy. It was nice to see characters in a musical be allowed to sing because they are in a musical. It kind of just got out of its own way on that point where Dreamgirls kind of stumbled over itself trying to give some sort of justification for the singing other than the fact that it was a musical.

I'm not going to compare the films (I enjoyed both very much).... but to compare "Cadillac Car" to "New Girl in Town" is just silly. CC is much more accurate in showing the way the music industry treated minority performers vs whites.
... I think Dreamgirls was fantastic... but would have been even better if they hadn't paid so much attention to getting names in it (I understand why they did, but I still don't like it).
was that supposed to be some sort of clever attempt to suggest that because you arent jewish you arent circumcised? cause i know plenty of circumcised gentiles. hell im one
something like 75% of white american males are circumcised.
so, being catolic doesnt work as a reason. Updated On: 7/31/07 at 02:08 AM
Only on BWW can the topic go from Hairspray vs. Dreamgirls to who out of the posters is circumcised... Just goes to show how seriously we take our theatre.
As for the actual topic-
John Travolta vs. Jennifer Hudson... THAT'S enough said...
I enjoyed Dreamgirls way more than Hairspray, and I've been a fan of Hairspray the musical longer. John Travolta's take on the character made me want to vomit. The fact that he rejected the first couple prototypes of the fat suit because it MADE EDNA LOOK TOO FAT says it all...
I hold a degree in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. It is useless. Now I'm funny for money. Oh, and I sing.
