I want to enter for tomorrow's matinee, but I'm curious how quickly they do the drawing for the matinees."
Are you thinking of the digital rush? It opens 11am on the day of the show and it'll tell you right away if you get tickets. I had friends that did it this past weekend and said it was pretty easy to get two tickets to the evening show right at 11am."
That's good to know.. I'll enter immediately at 11am and hopefully get notified soon after for their 2pm performance. This way I won't have to wait on line at TKTS.
I finally got to see this tonight and it is truly just a goddamn delight of a production. A perfectly cast, well-directed production of an utterly charming show. I haven’t seen a production since the original tour- it’s easy to forget how well-crafted and effective the show is. It disarms you with its audiences spellers, eccentric characters, and hilarious sample sentences in the first half, then makes the characters’ struggles and anxieties very real and heartfelt in the second. It takes its adolescent weirdos very seriously, much to its credit. There’s been a good amount of updating the book, from many new words to a re-conception of Mitch Mahoney to an impressive solving of a rubick’s cube.
The cast is perfection- from Justin Cooley’s endearingly odd Leaf to Autumn Best’s tightly wound Logainne. Jasmine Amy Rogers soars in a very different role from Boop- her Olive is heartbreaking without being pitiful, her loneliness undercut by her dorky love of language and instinctive kindness. “The I Love You Song” is the crown jewel of the score and Rogers, Matt Manuel, Lilli Cooper knock it out of the park. Cooper also shines here a great deal- her Rona is harder edged and less warm than Lisa Howard, but her casual bitchiness and air of self-importance work really well and are very funny.
It’s just such a charming production, a perfect antidote to everything going on in the world. The show celebrates these spelling nerds and wears its heart on its sleeve and in the hands of this cast you root for everyone to win. The audience reacted with audible disappointment to the eliminations, which to me shows how well the show builds these characters and how well these performers bring them to life.
Got two rush tickets at 11:10 for today's matinee
I'll echo the raves for this show. It's in a perfect spot to return to NYC. This would flop in even the smallest Broadway house. But the show for today's matinee was well sold and it appears they give out the remaining seats as the rush tickets. I got center orchestra, row F, as did everyone else in our row. What a fun, simple, silly show to see in what are some ****ty times right now.

This is the fourth time I've seen this show (Bway, tour, Donmar) and I don't remember crying at the end the other three times. Maybe Jasmine does stuff with Olive that deepens it? She's wonderful. Justin Cooley all but steals the show. Which is hard to do because the entire cast is fantastic. What an absolutely terrific revival!

My goodness, yes, about Jasmine's Olive. She deserves an award for her performance in Spelling Bee. It's heartbreaking and feels good, too. This entire cast is all-star level.
I’m not a super emotional audience member but I do admit that Jasmine got me, both during the “I Love You Song” and her epilogue. The simple way she says that she grew into an attentive parent is just so beautifully sweet and knowing. Olive has always been the heart of Spelling Bee and Jasmine just delivers pure heart.
