I went to last night's show. I didn't know anything about Spelling Bee other than it's supposed to be "cute and funny," so I had no real expectations or preconceptions. I have to say that I really enjoyed it and was completely impressed by how every single performer seemed to be "on." The board probably doesn't need a really in-depth review of the show, but it's definitely a show I'll look back and smile at for some time.
Hey, I was wondering if Bee was plannnig on closing before April becuase they are only selling tickets until January.

<< Me and Norbie. I look icky becuase I was FREAAAAKKKIIINNNGG out.
Words given to the audience spellers included jihad (#1 out), intolerant (#2 out), mexican, cow, apoop (but with an italian Guido- "scuze me boys, butta i'ma gonna go apoop"), wannigan (#3 out), catterjunes (#4). I enjoyed extra add-ins like Panch's comment for when Chip was having issues- "I am not trying to be hard on you" and Barfee's "Get on your horse and ride out of town- tittup, tittip, tittup!". Leaf used 2 finger puppets, a red boy and a purple girl and proceeded to make kissing noises into the microphone. Of course, all the local stuff like taking SEPTA to the Bee. Barfee saying "I'm taking it all" sounding like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Logainne saying A-holes instead of suckers, Rona doing the high kick and flashing her panties, Jesus had a twisty moustache, trying to think of other things. Audience descriptions included a kid with a record breaking cucumber, a kid who was the first kid in his class to receive an award for catching crabs, the casual clothing to the bee, head lice, a woman who was kicked off Project Runway because she designed her outfit she was wearing, a young entreprenuer who raised money for the A/V Club with his DVD Putnam Valley Girls Gone Wild, and the woman who was waiting for her clothes to come out in color.

Ahhh I see. I'm actually glad my mom got picked, though. I think it really boosted her interest in musical theatre. She had an absolute BLAST, and told me her stories after the show. She said when they were introducing Leaf's family, someone behind her kneed her back to tell her to stand up at one of the guy names so she could be told "You're not him!" LOL

The first time I heard that was in Chicago, and I've heard Josh use it on Broadway more recently, along with things like picking up Logainne at the end of Woe is Me (instead of covering up her mouth), having people sing together in the "we breathe, we wait" at the beginning, etc.
They are trying to make all the companies be more similar.
Well, I'd say the Chicago company was the most different (sorry, I'm tired and can't figure out how to say that properly), Boston was most similar, and the tour was somewhere in between.
