Geez, what's wrong with you guys? It's Thanksgiving; lighten up! It was a great opening number for the parade, they picked a good song, the cast was totally energetic and Ethan Slater is not creepy. The costumes and puppets are quite original. It's almost like an underwater "PeeWee's Playhouse".
It's something "different" and I'll bet the box office is going to really take off after that performance. So, I guess, Scrooges need not apply...Happy Turkey Day to all!
Oh, Spongebob my ass.
I thought it was horrendous. Came off extremely amateurish.
Clearly Tina Landau, the director, has seen the responses on Twitter. She posted about it and Wesley Taylor retweeted. It was always going to be a divisive show. I wasn't a fan overall (although the cast and creatives clearly tried their best), but I still wish them success.

WHY? Why aren't people allowed to not like something without being called out for it as haters (or in this place Scrooge?) Let people have their opinions just as you have yours. If some people find him creepy, you saying he isn't doesn't change anything FOR THEM.

And honestly I didn't think Dear Evan Hansen came off well either. It just seemed inert. I think it's really hard to convey the show without the stage design. I don't think that number worked out ofcontext."
I missed pretty much all of the Macy’s Day parade as I was getting ready then traveling to see my mom. But my co-worker (who is extremely judgmental) posted on my FB timeline that after their performance, she could see why I like the show and she even teared up during their parade performance.
Have only seen snippets of the Spongebob tv show so really don't know much about it.
Based on that performance, I will most likely see the show. Looks like it might be a fun evening at the theater and loved the song.
As far as him being creepy....he is playing a sponge! And if I remember correctly from the clips, the character has that laugh. So would he then be slammed for not doing it and not being true to the character? Lighten up people!
If he came within an arm's reach of any small children in that outlandish get up, it would most likely prove to be the realization of their worst nightmare.

Lol, I know that’s the signature laugh and he was going to have do it for the show. I guess it just sounds creepier coming from a grown man wearing plaid capris than an animated yellow sponge. But that’s just me! I certainly do not speak for everyone in saying that and overall, I do think the show looks very electric and fun. Haven’t seen it yet so I only have clips and pictures to go on!

i love musicals and give most shows a healthy benefit
im skeptical about this one partly because of everything ive read from the pre broadeay and the fact i cant answer the question: why is a musical being made about spongebob squarepants?
this number did not move me a bit....
if this show finds legs on broadway ill be shocked

Have you been to any Santa Land across the country?

I thought it was fun. I don't have much interest in the show, but it was cute. I thought the costumes worked well for the characters. Those guys in the shorts must have been freezing, though.
No, I haven't been to any Santa Land across the country.
But I have been to Spongebob.
And that's what I'm basing my stance on.
Next question?

Totally agree--those tight pants do wonders for his ass---and those guns and that oh so pale skin !
Sell my clothes I was in Heaven.
The show sucks and is a cheap attempt to make money. However the box office seems to prove that their scheme isn't working all that well. I mean this as no disrespect to the performers, who are trying their best, but the show is poorly written, long, and boring. Their Macy's performance came off as a joke. It makes a mockery of Broadway.
I for one think Ethan is absolutely adorable. I am in love with him. And I will counter all the criticism and say that I had a great time at the show, and the set is gorgeous. And Pearl. My God.

You're, uh, welcome to your opinion and everything but you're wrong. If you know even the slightest thing about the creative team (Tina Landau, Christopher Gatelli, Tom Kitt, etc.) and the DECADE long process of development this show has gone through, you would know better than call it a "cheap attempt to make money".
Seasoned and well-respected posters like Whizzer, Kad, and Scripps have given it generally positive reviews. Even AfterEight had some nice things to say. I believe you yourself gave it a 6/10. A 6/10 "sucks"? What "sucks" is the unnecessary vitriol this show brings out in people.
I was pleasantly surprised by Spongebob Squarepants at the Macy’s parade. I remember liking the cast recording okay when it was streaming for free earlier this year, but still wasn’t expecting much. The guy playing SS is cute as a button and seems very talented. I personally didn’t find his laugh creepy as some posters in the threads have posited. I confess I know little to nothing about the cartoon (I’m 53 and don’t have kids so never has been on my radar except peripherally). I thought the song and the performance did feel like an excerpt from a Broadway show and not a theme park show. Still not sure I’m the audience for this. I loved Pee-Wee’s Playhouse (the TV show; sadly never got to see it on stage) so I suppose it’s possible. That song they performed does seem like a crowd-pleaser. Also, glad they didn’t get too literal with the costumes.
Well just because it took 10 years to develop doesn't make it any less of a cash grab. I mean it's not like anyone was begging for a Spongebob musical, or the fact that this story NEEDED to be told. It didn't.
And again, the actual BUILD out of the theater is gorgeous, but the actual set is very flimsy looking and confusing in its perspective.
I asked my niece 9 and my nephew 11 if they wanted to see the show after that performance and they both said no ...it looked like children's theater. Who is the audience btw for this show? I have no interest in it either!

It doesn't matter that it took 10 years to create, it's still a cheap cash grab. I adore and respect the creative team, and yeah I gave it a 6/10 (a D, if we're going by the American grading scale), which means it was barely tolerable, but after seeing comments from people like "Broadway sucks" and "this is why I hate musicals" on Twitter about this show, it kindled some hate in my heart for it. No Broadway doesn't suck, cheap, commercial theatre sucks and I'm sick of seeing these kinds of shows. Produce something original for crying out loud!
Thanksgiving dinner at my family home involved watching a recording of that morning's parade so my PARENTS could see Spongebob again.
Yes, I treated my 60 year old parents to the show the night before and they loved it so much that I had to show my father how to save the album on Spotify because he can't get "Bikini Bottom Day" out of his head.
And now based on my dad's recommendation, my aunt and uncle (mid-60s) will be seeing the show soon.
I've been listening to folks deride Spongebob since the cartoon premiered as simply kid's stuff. It's not.

Unless you want to see every show that opens on Broadway (which is fine if you do) or you have young kids, I really can't see why any childless adult would want to spend two and a half hours watching this. As Dramamama said, it'd be cute for a young child but that's about it. Didn't get it when the show was announced and still don't after watching that number.
