"Why would they do that? Especially if Duncan Sheik is presenting an award anyway..."
...I REALLY hope you're joking and don't seriously not understand why they would attempt that.
Digital Rush??
Um...didn't the Public start this first???
"DIGITAL TICKET RUSH!!???"
It's a "digital rush". You enter online the day of the show, and it works pretty much like a rush.

Spring Awakening has brought the digital revolution to Broadway, and we’re ready to break the mold again with another first: Digital Rush.
Looking for great seats at a great price? Look no further. We’re offering orchestra and front mezzanine seats for only $40. Not a student? No problem. Digital rush is open to anyone. Don’t have time to wait in line for day-of discount tickets? Don’t worry. All you need is a cell phone and online access–the process is 100% digital and trouble free.
Here’s how it works:
1. SIGN UP below any time between 12am-3pm the day you'd like to see the show
2. GET A TEXT confirming your SUCCESSFUL ENTRY in that day's Digital Rush.
3. RECEIVE A CODE via text message by 4pm, redeemable only once, at www.springawakening.com/digitalrush
4. BUY YOUR TICKETS online and pick up at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre
It’s that easy! No need to keep checking the site – your cell phone will alert you when you tickets are available for purchase.
eh, OK?
Which other than the fact that you PAY for these is pretty much like the Public's virtual line.
Real groundbreaking folks. *sarcasm*

So the big thing is that the price of rush has gone up?
How underwhelming. Oh well.
Back to waiting for the Tony's.
Like jordangirl said this isn't exactly revolutionary. Adapting the concept to Broadway productions is still a good idea though.
So, so, SO stupid.
I think, according to the site, that normal rush tickets are still $27 if you wait on line, or $40 if you do this "digital rush" thing. I doubt the target audience is going to care much. If they're the type of people who will wait overnight to get a $27 rush seat instead of buying one at the box office, then a $40 ticket isn't going to be much of an incentive.
Wow, was this it? Spring Awakening must have been a little too desperate for attention.

I really like this idea. What about those people who work during the day and can't spend all day waiting in line for tickets?
I think this really will change the way the rush is done at many more theaters. If it does, that's the very definition of groundbreaking.

Except they're NOT the first. If ground was broken, it was by the Public for Shakespeare in the Park with their virtual line.
Wow.
All of you fanboys should feel dissapointed. Talk about overhyping something so ridiculously stupid.
I don't think you can even try to convince me that this is "groundbreaking" and "revolutionary"
give me a ****ing break!
So I can get a ticket to the REAL ground breaking rock musical HAIR in the park this Summer like this?

So maybe the Public did it first, but it's obvious this is an improvement. And if the Public's idea didn't proliferate to other theaters right away, it didn't work.
The major Broadway productions need something that will still get them a little money, so they needed a system where people would still have to pay for tickets. If you can get day-of shows while sitting at your computer at work, how is that not awesome?
The same people that are bashing this will use it the next time they want to see Spring Awakening. If you don't want to see it again (or for the first time), why do you care?
"And if the Public's idea didn't proliferate to other theaters right away, it didn't work. "
Actually the Public's idea did proliferate. I hear Spring Awakening is doing a digital rush.

But this is obviously an improvement on that same idea.

So, what? Is it randomly decided who gets tickets or is it whoevever signs up first?

It seems like it's random. That's how I read it.
How is it an improvement?? Oh, I see. Because you pay for these tickets. Yeah...that makes sense.
Also, the Public just started it this season. But it's been going on since the first night of Hamlet. So earlier than this "groundbreaking" event.
