There are 3 new colorful pictures of West Side Story that was posted about a few hours ago and I hope that Justin Peck's choreography is stellar and thrilling like his work on that flawed Carousel revival from 2018. Also with David Newman on the music supervision and arrangements, also Gustavo Dudamel of the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducting, is telling me they are going all out with a huge orchestra for the score and songs.

I'm laughing at all the people expecting perfect realism in a movie musical. Please. Just because it's not white people in brownface doesn't make it modern. Relax.
It's really hard to tell just from the scraps we've seen. Some of them make it look slick and modern in an almost Disney Channel way. But others look like a real color photo from 1957. But I'd like to see a trailer before I pass any strong judgement.
Needless to say whenever the trailer does come, it will get people impressed/excited with what Steven Spielberg and the talented cast and crew are doing in comparison to other musical films which either didn't do anything for them or appalled them.
But then again, I seriously doubt we'll ever sink to the lows that Tom Hooper and Cats (2019) brought us to ever again. Hopefully.

I really think it looks too pretty and “50’s”
It doesn’t feel authentically the time period.
Like another poster said.
It just feels very fake and manicured which is not what the story is.
People on this thread acting like they're not gonna see it when you KNOW their ass is buying an opening night ticket ...assuming movie theaters are still a thing come December.

When talking about how this show went from stage to screen, most people only note the switching of Cool and Gee Officer Krupke. I just realized the movie also made other placement changes. In the stage version, One Hand, One Heart is sung in Act One. In the film, it’s moved to Act Two. Of course we know the Tonight Quintet and the Rumble are done in Act One in the stage show and Act Two opens with I Feel Pretty. In the film, of course Act Two still opens with I Feel Pretty, but Tonight Quintet and the Rumble are moved to Act Two. Also, I haven’t seen WSS on stage, but I didn’t know the stage version of Somewhere had lyrics that were cut from the movie. It will be interesting to see what this new movie will go with in terms of song placements and putting back in things that were cut. I also wonder how the attemped rape of Anita will be handled.

I want to see a trailer soon.
I agree, I really want the see the first trailer to this. Hopefully either this month or in July, we'll see something very soon.
We won’t get a trailer until they’re absolutely positive it will come out in December.

He's wanted to do WSS since he was a kid.
He's said in an interview that he had the original 1957 cast recording as a kid and loved imagining what the dances would be like. I can tell that he has love and passion for this project which counts for a lot when you're doing a new film adaptation of a classic musical.
Some say that he should've done Fiddler on the Roof, but I think Spielberg doing West Side Story and Thomas Kail doing Fiddler is the right call.
^Totally agree. I'm so excited for them both!

I can't wait to also see Justin Peck's choreography.
So am I, I think Spielberg made the right call hiring a tremendous talent like Justin Peck to work on the choreography. Justin's work on the 2018 Carousel revival was one of the best things about it and deserved the Tony Award; also his NYC Ballet work is also pretty stunning.
I hope that the "Somewhere Ballet" makes it into the final cut.

I hope they have a beautiful offscreen voice singing Somewhere in the manner of how it's done usually in the stage production.

ariana debose who plays anita is afro latino. she is the only black puerto rican out of the puerto ricans. there needed to be way more black latinx representation in this. especially since there are so many afro latinos in harlem
If MULAN is able to open in theatres, I imagine Disney will put a WEST SIDE STORY trailer before it.
Knowing that Spielberg’s wanted to do this film since he was a kid convinced me that it’s gonna be great. He clearly has a great passion for the show, and he’s at his best when his passion really shines through.
I have zero enthusiasm for this, but I do think Broadway being shut down is going to create a huge audience for the film, and may be what makes it a box office hit. All the people--across the country, around the world--upset at theater being shut down, my see this as a sign of health, or a light in the darkness.
To me, the movie is pretty great, and what isn't pretty great about it doesn't actively mar it in any way.
David Alvarez (Bernardo) talks about his involvement with the audition and filming process of West Side Story at 39:26. He says some pretty interesting things about how the film is going to be saying that it's "Real".
