Itobviously has been moved in the plot timeline from where it takes placeas written: after the dance at the gym. The original 1957 Broadway version is in an alley and the 1961 film adaptation is on a rooftop - at night.
"

I'm curious as to where they'll place Krupke, Cool, and I Feel Pretty. And I hope they give more stuff for characters like Velma and Graziella to do.

There's two possibilities: one is that they will use the 1961 version's placements of the two songs, or they have them restored to their original 1957 placements. It has been reported over and over again that Tony Kushner's script will be closer to the original Broadway script than the one used in the 1961 version.

I hope they flesh out more of the ensemble characters, like Velma and Graziella, along with Rosalia.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't. It's just the matter of waiting and see what the new film will do with them.

Musical Master said: "I personally don't think it's going to be pushed back.I think that if things still don't go well in the next month or so,they can pull the theatrical release and make it a Disney+ Original on December 18th. That would be a good alternative.

Most December movie musicals don't have their marketing push until late September/early October anyway so why don't we wait and see what happens.
"

I feel like it's basically a foregone conclusion that this movie will not open in theaters this year. Universal has moved Candyman to next year and there is strong talk that Disney will pull Black Widow and Soul from the schedule as well. MGM will probably shift No Time To Die to next year. Even with the LA and NY markets closed, Tenet performed well under Warner Bros' expectations, which doesn't bode well for any big theatrical release in the near future. Audiences simply are not going to return to theaters until they feel safe, and opening up the LA / NY markets is not going to be a silver bullet.

Why don't we wait and see what the studio will do first, because we all don't know what they'll do yet. If it's pushed back, it will be pushed back; if it stays in December 18th, it stays on December 18th.

You know what? You are right! Let's stop discussing everything on this discussion board. No more discussion at all, and certainly no more speculation! It's just so foolish of people to make inferences based on evidence that arises. Musical Master has spoken, everyone!

Am I the only one who feels weird when they see a clip of the Hello Dolly film since it absolutely murdered the movie musical for decades?

Sure the movie was a cause of movie musicals to fall for many years to come until Moulin Rouge! and Chicago brought it back from the dead, but I am one of the few who really love it. Also it wasn't just Hello, Dolly! alone but a slew of other big budget movie musicals of the mid to late 1960s before Hello, Dolly! that were huge critical and commercial duds that were made anyway because My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, and The Sound of Music were highly successful musical films in a decade when the genre and the roadshow release format was dying off and studios misinterpreted these three as the great comebacks when really they were VERY LUCKY.

Whenever I see pictures or hear anything about the new film version of West Side Story, I'm wondering if this is Steven Spielberg's answer/throwback to those big budget 1960's musicals. Because that type of musical film can work now in a post 2000's world in comparison to the 1970's-1980's where the genre wasn't popular anymore (with the exception of Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, and Grease). It's all very interesting stuff.

So I was bored and decided to look up the cast list of this movie on IMDB to see if there would be some more insight about this version. I saw one actor whose character is called Detective at Morgue, which indicates there might be a scene at a morgue? Other characters include Boxing Coach, Boxing Trainer, etc, which coincides with reports that Bernardo will be a boxer. I also looked up the crew list and an interesting thing I found is there’s someone who will be an Intimacy Coordinator, which indicates to me that a sex/love scene will be in the picture. I don’t know the history of Intimacy Coordinators, but I guess they’re hired for love scenes that aren’t so simple?

There has been a growing push in the industry as a whole for the expansion of intimacy coordinators, and their roles have expanded well beyond what you might expect when you hear the title. Obviously they are being hired for complicated love scenes, but the move within in the industry, especially in the wake of the #metoo movement, is to bring them in for any scenes that would require close physical contact. Just using the stage script, an intimacy coordinator would be involved with not just the romantic scenes between Tony and Maria, but the attack on Anita by the Jets as well.

Oh yes, I forgot about the attempted rape of Anita by the Jets! Yeah, an Intimacy Coordinator would definitely be needed for that. Thanks!

I'd love a trailer on December 10, one year before the release date.

Also, I’m sure these nameless roles will be in montages seen/used throughout the film.

The idea that Hello, Dolly! is solely responsible for what happened is kinda odd. The Sound of Music is the movie usually fingered (unfairly) as the real culprit because it inspired so many 3 hour +, multimillion dollar musicals in its wake that tanked at the box office. In any case, it is this series of expensive flops--including Star!, Camelot, Doctor Doolittle, Paint Your Wagon, Man of La Mancha, Darling Lili, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, At Long Last Love, The Wiz and maybe a few others--that did the genre in for a spell. Not the failure of one movie.

I think in early 2021 we'll have a teaser trailer. Hopefully it can generate some buzz.

I feel like this thread has unofficially become the West Side Story movie thread, even though it stemmed from the Vanity Fair feature back in March, Anyway, here is Rachel Zegler in Vogue (print & online) talking about the new film and her version of Maria. Nice photo shoot as well.
