I agree. I also thought some of them didn't really go anywhere. (e.g., the entire (relatively obscure) sleep no more prong although I did like bath salts.)

B&H Photo on 9th Avenue is own and run by Hasidic Jews so if you’ve ever been in the store, you’d instantly get the joke. I also chuckled quite loud."

I love inside references like this where 95% of the people watching won't get the joke but they don't care because they know the 5% that will get the joke will be on the floor laughing and that's more than enough justification for doing it.

I will agree that this seemed to be the weakest of the musical skits they've done. I tink a this point, we are expecting it, so it can sometimes seem tired. Personally, I'm not a John Mulaney fan, so this week wasn't the greatest. The 5 Timers Club was great though.

I think these musical sketches are uniquely NY-centric- especially this one. If you live in the city it all made complete sense- and the subway system is all over the place right now and I thought this sketch conveyed that- but maybe I'm giving it too much credit. I could see how someone not living in the city may have failed to pick up the jokes. In regard to the episode feeling rushed, I think we've gotten used to Weekend Updates that are packed with characters and not all jokes, but this was a nice return to form I thought. The thing about the whole episode I thought odd was where was Pete Davidson? I was also expecting some Kanye jokes given the situation involving the two of them, but they were nowhere to be found.

SNL has always been so New York City-centric. Watching it as a teenager back in Ohio, there were so many references I didn't get--didn't even know they were New York City references! Those seemingly obscure, strangely specific talk shows? I didn't even know there was such a thing as public access! That Lily Tomlin New York cheer? Had no idea the city was almost bankrupt in the 70's. I had no inkling what Rosanne Rosanadana's referenced Fort Lee, New Jersey was. And now I live right across the bridge from it! "Chee'burger, Chee'burger, Chee'burger!" I wonder if kids in the hinterlands are so much more sophisticated that they now completely get things like Churros on the Subway...

Indeed it was. SNL writer Don Novello (aka Father Guido Sarducci), John Belushi and Bill Murray knew Billy Goat Tavern from their Chicago Second City days and referenced it in that recurring sketch.
