SNL has always been so New York City-centric. Watching it as a teenager back in Ohio, there were so many references I didn't get--didn't even know they were New York City references! Those seemingly obscure, strangely specific talk shows? I didn't even know there was such a thing as public access! That Lily Tomlin New York cheer? Had no idea the city was almost bankrupt in the 70's. I had no inkling what Rosanne Rosanadana's referenced Fort Lee, New Jersey was. And now I live right across the bridge from it! "Chee'burger, Chee'burger, Chee'burger!" I wonder if kids in the hinterlands are so much more sophisticated that they now completely get things like Churros on the Subway...
