i am sick of people complaining about this movie. they need to understand that this movie will NOT be a remake of the original. it is based on the broadway musical. it’s gonna be its own thing. they aren’t trying to redo the original. the original will remain untouched.

You see Shug performing, you see Celie stepping on to a stage, the entire trailer is backed by Fantasia singing, and then we flash upon her face as she's hitting a high note. Anybody who doesn't realize it's a musical is an idiot.

What are you going on about? You clearly see Fantasia belting the song that we hearthrough most of the teaser.
It's only a teaser; they have a very limited time to give the audience a taste of what's to come. They let us see the main themes, hit on important story arcs, and clearly showed the main character belting her face off. This teaser clearly gave the audience all of the necessary information, including the fact that it is a musical.
What a stunning trailer. It gives enough to remind you that it’s The Color Purple but shows enough to make you realise it’s a completely different entity. This movie is going to do so much good for so many people, I absolutely cannot wait.

As others have said, you'd really have to be stupid to NOT get from this trailer that it's a musical...
However, to answer your question -- sometimes trailers tend to hide the fact that the movie is a musical. That's because it's a "lose/lose" situation. On the one hand, you risk alienating people who do not like musicals. Then on the other hand you get the people who claim to love musicals -- but then prejudge the films based on a few seconds of clips and then go on to post ridiculous comments such as...

Fantasia was naturally physically expressive when she sang that song live, but here her movement looks inorganic and over-directed. I know it's only a second or two, but, out of context, it immediately read as cheesy to me.

that short clip of young celie with the male dancers in the background wearing jail outfits, that looks like the song big dog
Does anyone know how the movie is going to handle the Shug/Celie romance? The old movie completely deleted that storyline and I've even talked to some people who walked out of the musical not realizing Celie and Shug were romantic together. Curious how Celie's lesbianism will be handled in 2023

someone in this thread who saw a screening said that they portray shug and celie’s relationship as unambiguously queer
And people thought this was going to be more visually appealing compaired to other movie musicals ...
From the early screening we saw. - Same thing.
It's a movie/tv musical - overhyped.
I liked the Broadway revival (didn't see the original) but I have my doubts that this will translate well to the screen. The Spielberg film is good but deeply flawed and weird in a lot of ways, and this movie looks like the same thing but with musical numbers, and without Spielberg's visual sense or the Allen Daviau cinematography. I think there was a reason the staging of the revival worked so well and this movie is a move in the opposite direction. Also, personally, I'm not sure I want to sit through this story yet again. But I'll probably see it and may even like it. Keeping an open mind.

Having seen Beyoncé's "Black Is King" film which Blitz Bazawule co-directed, I struggle to believe anything he'd direct would be visually "typical"

apparently from the test screening reports, celie and nettie’s relationship gets more focus in this movie. and the test screening cut was close to three hours.

There's no reason to push this movie to 2024.
Release date to be pushed to 2024. Along with Dune part two. Both were due to screen at Toronto Film Festival but are now pulled.
