Turn off your cell phones… a pair of legends is coming back home to the stage.
Patti LuPone returns to Broadway alongside Mia Farrow in Jen Silverman’s play The Roommate, beginning previews tomorrow night (August 29). A two-person character study, The Roommate premiered in 2015 and has been staged both at the 2017 Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago the following year. This mounting is directed by Jack O’Brien; opening night is September 12 at the Booth Theatre for a run through December 15.
“Sharon’s never had a roommate before. In fact, there’s a lot Sharon’s never done before, but Robyn’s about to change all that. Jen Silverman’s The Roommate shatters expectations with its witty and profound portrait of a blossoming intimacy between two women from vastly different backgrounds, as they navigate the complexities of identity, morality, and the promise of reinvention. Being bad never felt so good as it does in this riveting one-act about second acts.”
How many guests have been invited to the house so far?
Dolly80 Not to be pedantic but if a ‘pair’ is a singular entity it might indeed be is and not are? I personally don’t care though I’m just super excited to see Patti on stage again and can’t wait! Hoping sales are ok?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Anyway, the show will have a $35 digital lottery and a $30 digital rush through Telecharge (though they both can’t be accessed yet). Rush opens 11 AM the day of a performance.
In-person rush at the Booth box office will be $39.

It's not being pedantic when someone makes a very snarky comment correcting someone else, when, in fact, they're 100% wrong. They deserve to be called out for their active ignorance.

My bad- apologies. It just read bad but I see now it makes sense 🫣
I knew that Silverman's play has been produced elsewhere, including ATL (2015) and Williamstown (2017), but I just learned it's actually already published by Samuel French (2017). One can assume all rights have been withheld for this brand new debut. But the good news here: like "Appropriate," which was first developed at Sundance in 2011 and reached Broadway in the fall of 2023, plays have longer and fuller lives than ever before. I'm as happy for the gifted Ms. Silverman as I am for the two iconic stars.

Carol Halstead will be LuPone and Farrow’s understudy. This is her first Broadway credit in 24 years.
David Yazbek is credited with writing original music. Assuming the rumored transfers of Dead Outlaw and Buena Vista Social Club are true, this will be a big, big Broadway season for him.
Herbal cigarettes and a non-firing prop gun are used in the show, for those who may be sensitive to those things.
I saw this at Williamstown. I thought it was a hoot. I thought that it needed a little bit of oomph which I think Patti and Mia can deliver in spades. Looking forward to this.
