The sets were quite basic. The rumor was that the show was built to tour and the set seemed to be the kind of set that toured. Most set pieces were rolled on our dropped down from the flies. The lighting, however, was really marvelous. Expressionistic, unique and beautiful.
The audiences were FILLED with The Who and Pete Townsend fanatics so I don't think producers think they need a star to sell the show... rightly or wrongly. The cast in Chicago was really wonderful except a fairly stiff Adam Jacobs (who still did a fine job).
I know regional theater awards are a much different ball game than the New York based awards, but Ali Louis Bourzgui won a Jeff award for his performance. It would be a shame if he didn’t get the chance to transfer.
Out of curiosity, did they used the revised ending from the previous Broadway production, or go back to that of the concept album?

"The newly reimagined production of The Who's Tommy, which had a sold-out run at Chicago's Goodman Theatre this past summer, has announced a spring 2024 Broadway bow."
Hope they did not change this too much; the original was pretty darn good.

Not if it closes in March. Every year there's a well-reviewed revival in the fall that everyone assumes is the one to beat (Into the Woods, Follies, Caroline or Change, etc.) that then closes and something else comes along and wins. Remember, no closed show has ever won Best Revival of a Musical and with a bunch of presumably acclaimed revivals still running in June, seems very unlikely this year would break the trend."
IIRC, there are people here (take w grain of salt) who have claimed the MERRILY principals are contracted for 10 months. So an extension through the Tonys wouldn't shock me.
Best Revival Tony noms: Cabaret, Tommy & Merrily We Roll Along with
Spamalot or The Wiz up for the final slot (if 4).

It definitely may and if it does it certainly will be a big factor in the revival race. I'm just saying that if it does close as currently announced in March, more than likely one of Cabaret, Tommy or The Wiz will steal its thunder a bit in the ensuing 3 months and end up taking the Tony.
Unless THE WIZ does a LOT of work between now and Broadway, it doesn't represent a danger to any of the other show's chances of winning!

In this case, you are mistaken. Tommy is no jukebox musical. Tommy is a rock opera, and is not a pastiche of The Who's greatest hits.
TOMMY has more in common with something like LION KING or STATE FAIR or SINGIN IN THE RAIN than a jukebox musical –– the story & most of the songs come from the existing property (in this case an album/rock opera, and was also adapted into a film that shares some similarities).

Sorry, there is zero chance Merrily doesn't walk away with the Tony. Even if they do close in March. The heat behind the show, the making an "unfixable" show work like never before, the stacked cast accolades they're getting. They can engrave the trophy today.
(Also, for those asking about the Shubert, Hell's Kitchen.)

And to them I'd say they don't need to make room on their trophy shelf for a Best Revival Tony Award trophy (or best actor for that matter, Groff has that wrapped up as well).

So just to be clear, you're saying that something that has never happened in the history of the Tony awards (a closed musical winning revival) and something that hasn't happened in 25 years (an actor winning for a performance in a closed musical) are both already stone cold locks to happen here in October?

You’re assuming I think Merrily will actually close in March…

Lol You quite literally said "even if they close in March". That's the part that's being responded to here....
Ali Louis Bourzgui is continuing with the show in the title role.
I’m not sure when he’s leaving the Company tour yet.
