TOOTSIE to open at the Marquis, April 23 — Page 3

I forgot DROWSEY was there. I loved that show. Bob Martin's book was so rich, and that cast was terrific times two.

Robert Horn's book is winning seriously right on. I saw workshop of it, and he has crafted a wonderful take on Dorothy's world. I think he did a very funny job with HEE HAW too, and saw out of town.

have you heard it? What's your favorite songs? Least favorite? Why?

I think that in order for it to be a big commercial success it’d need a big name Star in the title role, which it doesn’t have. I think that the movie was a huge hit largely due to having Dustin Hoffman as the star. He was already a Hollywood superstate by the time Tootsie opened."
He may not be a Hollywood superstar or household name but Santino Fontana at least has more name recognition for tourists and people who may not follow Broadway closely, thanks to Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Frozen. He is well enough known on Broadway and in Hollywood to make a difference.

Theoretically, anyway, he should.
All that the marquee in front of the Cadillac Palace seems to be screaming is TOOTSIE.

He is...don't think so.

Can we not consider "On Your Feet" a success for the Marquis? They played 746 performances (almost 2 years) despite mixed reviews and no major awards recognition. Most shows on Broadway have trouble staying open for a year and they almost stayed open for 2. Correct me if I'm wrong but that seems like a success to me.

has no one considered maybe the theater dropped the rental price? i hardly think they have any bargaining power since essentially no show can survive there

Just because a show doesn't recoup doesn't make it a failure. A financial failure? Yes. A failure as a show? Absolutely not.
Are you sure that the originals of Sound of Music, Gypsy, and Funny Girl didn't recoup? I thought SOM for sure was a huge money maker. I would imagine that also with movie sales a lot of money was made with all three.

Even if those shows didn’t recoup in their original runs, I think we can agree that all signs point to OYF not being held in the same esteem as those shows. I don’t envision it attracting more affection as the years grow following its Broadway run. Its biggest achievement (which isn’t inconsiderable) is running almost two years despite middling critical response.

I kind of hate those "character" photos. If they are trying to market the show as the most bland thing to hit Broadway this season, they've succeeded.

I agree. Cute photos, but very basic.

I'm going to the evening performance on 3/30 and looking forward to it a great deal. It feels like ages since we've had a great new musical comedy.
Though, I must say, their extremely simple marquee, the lack of a real logo, and their choice to just have a photo of Santino shaving as their art is strange and uninspiring.
