Well, for a movie that is literally about Judy Garland, in a specific period of her life, a time from which recordings exist, it kind of does.
We're not talking about "a star like Judy Garland." We're talking Judy Garland. When you're playing a iconic talent like that, there is an expectation that you will sound exactly like them. It's why Audra's Billie Holiday was such a coup, even in a play that wasn't great.
We haven't heard or seen enough of the movie to say whether Zellweger's singing as Judy will be able to really capture late-career Judy. But it is an extremely tough ask. But sounding almost like Judy Garland is not going to cut it for much of the target audience for a Judy biopic.
