Is she really doing all her own singing in the movie? Please tell me that's not true...

I really wish she wasn’t doing her own signing. Even the most talented of singers would have a hard time channeling the God given talents of Judy Garland.
Otherwise it looks gorgeous.

Posted: 5/10/19 at 11:40amI’m actually pleased that she’s doing her own singing because I think it frees up the performance a bit. I found it distracting in Bohemian Rhapsody, for example, whenever they’d switch to Mercury’s real vocals because it never looked like the sound was coming out of Malek’s mouth and I think the performance suffered. While I’m sure Zellweger prerecorded her vocals, she can align her vocal performance with her on-screen performance.

Is this still based on the play End of the Rainbow? If so, she should definitely do her own singing. Tracie Bennett did an amazing job and she sounded nothing like Judy, but to see her act through those familiar songs in a new way made it worth suspending my disbelief. I haven't got a chance to see the teaser trailer yet so I wasn't sure if this is still based on the play, but if it does, her vocals shouldn't matter cause this is not a story of the top-form Judy we know and love.

@TotallyEffed Nobody says they're the same. What is this argument?
If you're expecting stellar Judy Garland vocals from a story (theatre or film) focusing on her last years (with drugs and health issues) you'll be awfully disappointed.

Renee is playing the older Judy a few months before her death when her voice wasn’t there anymore. Renee isn’t playing Judy at her prime. The film takes place during her disastrous run at London’s Talk of the Town.
And yes, this is an adaptation of the play END OF THE RAINBOW though the playwright has mentioned this film is more fact-based as his play was more fantasy.

That's because Malek didn't do a great job lip syncing. The entire success of the movie musical historically has been based on a great performer's ability to lip sync to a track-- Judy being one of the best.

You’re the one who brought up Tracie Bennett and the ability to suspend disbelief in the theatre.
Plenty of wonderful theatre actresses have played Edith Piaf on stage. But playing her in a film like La Vie en Rose is a totally different beast.

It seems like you don’t want to admit that this story does not require perfect Judy singing. On stage or on film. And I finally saw the trailer and I stand by everything I said... Renee sounds incredible in the trailer and I got goosebumps. If you said you’d rather have the Judy vocal track for Over the Rainbow when she was 16 in this context I don’t even know why you think this is a movie for you.
#12Teaser trailer for Judy w/Renee Zellweger
Posted: 5/10/19 at 12:16pmYou know she sang the song well into her 40s? There are many recordings of it without “perfect Judy singing.” You’re acting silly.

You must really hate Renee’s vocal in the trailer or you really enjoy making pointless arguments with a stranger on the internet.
I think Renee sounded amazing in the trailer and very appropiate for the story. She has proven herself in Chicago so rest assure, this is not another Russell Crowe fiasco.
The point I was trying to make is that unlike most biopics, the songs were not placed chronologically nor performed at the same time in Judy’s real life. Over the rainbow in this movie is her last number where she sang right before she dies and it has to be a very sad intrepitation of the song, how would you find a recording of that? Kind of like the new Rocketman movie (also sung by Taron as Elton John) this story is mostly fiction and also unauthorized, even Liza walked out half way through.
Anyway.. It might be a good thing that you didn’t like the way the movie is made, so you wont have to see it. I’m pretty sure Judy fans or purist would totally hate the story.

Huh? Whuh? Liza hasn’t even seen this nor will. Liza posted on Facebook months ago that she did not speak to Zellweger nor supported this film. Rumors were circulating saying otherwise which is why Liza spoke up.

Oh no sorry I meant Liza when she saw the play
edit : and nope I couldn't find the article where she gave an interview that she walked out or even saw the play. Don’t remember where I got that information, so I retract the comment. But I know she did not authorize or endorse the show at all.

Are you saying the Elton John film is mostly fiction and unauthorized? Because by all accounts (and the fact that Elton and his husband are EPs), it's very much authorized and much more true to life than at least BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY was.

It is authorized but a good chunk of it is fictionalized. It’s a fantasy he created based on his life, so it’s not an ordinary biopic.

TotallyEffed isn't saying Zellweger can't sing or doesn't sound good. He's saying that Garland's talent is extremely hard to duplicate because it is so singular, and it's especially hard to duplicate in a less forgiving medium like film.

Posted: 5/10/19 at 1:04pmIn which I completely agree. Renee could never duplicate Judy. Fortunately, the story doesnt require her to duplicate Judy. And that’s why I don’t agree on the point he/she was trying to make about replacing Renee’s vocal track with real Judy’s vocals.

Well, for a movie that is literally about Judy Garland, in a specific period of her life, a time from which recordings exist, it kind of does.
We're not talking about "a star like Judy Garland." We're talking Judy Garland. When you're playing a iconic talent like that, there is an expectation that you will sound exactly like them. It's why Audra's Billie Holiday was such a coup, even in a play that wasn't great.
We haven't heard or seen enough of the movie to say whether Zellweger's singing as Judy will be able to really capture late-career Judy. But it is an extremely tough ask. But sounding almost like Judy Garland is not going to cut it for much of the target audience for a Judy biopic.

You’re totally right about not being able to judge only from what was released. I for once wouldn’t care if she sounded exactly like Judy, that’s why I brought up Tracie Bennett. I would rather have an actor who focuses on pouring their emotions into the songs rather than imitating an unachievable icon. But to each their own I guess, I personally do not treat this as a Judy biopic, I actually think of this as the Dreamgirls to Diana Ross or King Charles III. If I want something accurate and vocally authentic I wouldve watch a documentary. And I for once have nothing bad to say about this trailer and can’t wait to be transported like I once was in End of the Rainbow. So I guess everyone has their own preference, but I would set my expectation correctly if you really love Judy, this paints her in a very desperate light. You might wanna skip this one.

It’s not some secret that Judy lived a tortured life and suffered a tragic death.
People know what to expect, even casual fans.

Dreamgirls is fiction inspired by the Supremes and doesn't claim to be about them. King Charles III is speculative/alt-history fiction. This movie purports to depict Judy Garland in early 1969 in London, not.. a star who is very much like Judy Garland but isn't called Judy Garland.

I doubt that Renee Zellweger, even at her best, can outdo the great Judy Davis in the TV biopic, which of course used Garland's own voice for almost all the songs.
