Today's matinee was fantastic.
Jackie's adlib, another instant classic:
"Am I the only that gets it, people?!"
Pause.
Grabs an onstage audience member, and while shaking him screams:
"THE DOMINICANS STOLE OUR TONY AWARD!"
Absolutely hysterical! Mary was also hysterical, mouthing "What do you know, you pack of assholes" to the audience and pointing at her, well you know...
During "Magic", Mary caught Jackie doing the wrong hand choreography and correcting herself, and for some reason could not stop cracking up in her chair! So cute.
It was such a fun performance, and up until the curtain, I managed to forget that it would be the last time I would be seeing the show. Then, of course, I lost it during the bows...
Suddenly 16 months of memories came rushing back to me...
Wondering what the hell was going on the day I noticed all the disco balls on the street, waiting to be loaded in...seeing two of the first previews with James Carpinello; Andre and Curtis alternating as Sonny; Cheyenne's "official" first performance; seeing myself unexpectedly at the end of the Nightline segment; the crazy cast changes that first summer when the original cast were falling like flies; that first fall, where audiences weren't coming, and the cast so appreciated us familiar faces onstage; the raucous Halloween performance; Patti taking over for Euterpe; seeing the Hayes filled to the rafters during the strike; taking my family for my birthday and Marty having fun with my aunt; Curtis' (first) final performance; Kyle Dean Massey's actual first performance; the crazy Boys Nights; seeing Annie as Calliope; July 4th weekend seeing Patti and Curtis as Kira and Sonny twice, and all the sugary sweetness between them; seeing Andre going on as Melpomene; realizing Tony Roberts may have never missed a performance; being onstage for Whoopi's first performance (and seeing myself in all the press pics the next day); Curtis taking over for Cheyenne mid-performance; seeing Kenita finally go on as Kira. And so much more. And of course, the 'Du Crew and the lovely people at the Hayes.
It's been a great ride. And I pass the theatre every morning and evening going to work next door to the theatre, and as the signs of Xanadu's existance disappear for the next tenant, I'll keep so many personal memories, so many
shared memories with the 'Du Crew, the cast and crew of the show, and the great people at the Hayes - a little piece of my heart will forever be with that roller disco.
"Hey little girls, look at all the men in shiny shirts and no wives!" - Jackie Hoffman, Xanadu, 19 Feb 2008
