I saw Cabaret for the first time yesterday...I have owend the OBC for years, but wasn't ever able to see it. I saw it at the Zachary Scott Theatre here in Austin with a Female, Suzanne Abbot, playing the Emcee.
At first I was like what? But she played thepart very well. I still htink it is more appropriate for a man to play...but she totally owned the stage and was fantastic. She and hte girl who played Sally who were both really good.
go and see it if you are near austin, you won't be disappointed.
I'm just wondering: How did they do "Two Ladies"? Was it the Emcee, Lulu, and then a guy? Or was it still a guy in drag, the Emcee in drag, then Lulu?
i've never heard of a female emcee! that sounds so cool!
Did they portray the character of the Emcee as a woman? Or was it just a male played by a woman?

Rita Moreno played the Emcee in stock about 30 years ago - she played it as a man - of course that was the old version with the Emcee in a tuxedo - not the bare chest with suspenders!
That's really interesting to think about... I'm not exactly sure what to make of it, or how I'd like it. I guess I just got really used to Emcee being played by a guy.

She playd it as a woman...but still very androgenous...
Two Ladies was what I was wondering the most about too...but it was her, one guy, and one girl...
I remember when the Mendes revival of Cabaret was in its second year at Studio 54, there was talk that Madonna was interested in playing the Emcee, and the producers were courting her for a long time.
i thought madonna was considering the role of sally bowles. i remember hearing that they where looking into lea dalaria for the emcee.
I like the Emcee better as played by a guy. I woudn't ever want to see the part played by a woman. Wouldn't do anything for me.
i nominate chenoweth for the Emcee. not sure where I'm trying to go with this, I just hate to see a thread without her mentioned.
"I wash my face, then drink beer, then I weep. Say a prayer and induce insincere self-abuse, till I'm fast asleep"- In Trousers
interesting concept- but the big question is, did they keep the willian ivey long costumes used in the mendes production? that would certainly make for an entertaining evening.

Hmm, that's interesting! I think they did a production like that in Chicago a few years ago...I can't remember the town. I'd be fascinated to see how that could be pulled off. I say keep the revival costumes!
bwguyhottie, I live in Austin, too! Maybe I know you? I'll send you a PM.
I also saw this and I'm still not sure how I feel about the emcee being a woman. I think it was more of a matter of seeing the emcee as a man so many times. I finally thought, "Well, with all the gender-bending in Cabaret anyway, why not?" Suzanne Abbot was very engaging and has a wonderful voice. See link for costume.
The Emcee
Wow. Now that looks more like RHS than Cabaret. Must have been an interesting show...
I just looked at that link... actually kind of freaked me out. Just not the Emcee I'm used to, I suppose. *looks up at poster on her wall* ah, that's better.
