I will never fully recover from that fact that Judy and Liza never did it. It would have been definitive.

I hope this is already in the works to happen with Audra in the next two or three years. Some of these other names being tossed around are wishful thinking but would probably not be considered by producers looking for a name to go above the title and to attract out-of-towners and non-theatre fanatics.

Unfortunately I think the days of that “name” star with the vocal and acting strength are limited for the upcoming generations.
Personally I’d be curious to see Alice Ripley or Lea Michele (if she hadn’t destroyed advancing a career).
Reba McEntire
Lea Salonga or Sutton Foster would be interesting
Donna Murphy
Lady Gaga could eventually be an interesting choice.
How is Kelly clarksons acting chops?

Slight problem with the Celia Rose Gooding suggestion- SHE CANNOT ACT

LaChanze would smash it. I’d love to see / hear that. The show needs a big voice (apparently unlike Bobbie in Company… )"
Why would Bobbie in Company need to be a big voice when Bobby in Company doesn't need a big voice? Dean Jones didn't really have a big voice, nor did Boyd Gaines, nor Adrian Lester for that matter.
Being Alive is a great song, and sounds great with a big voice, but despite Raul Esparza's thrilling turn at the role, it does not require a big voice to pull it off.

I’ve said this so many times in the Company threads as people kept insisting that Bobbie needed to be a “belter.”

I think it would be divine to have a drag queen play Rose.
A Broadway-mounted, black version would be wonderful.
Porchlight in Chicago did it a few years back. A beautiful production.
Audra, yes, could act it, but I don't think I'd want to hear her sing it.

The only person mentioned on this thread so far that I’d want to see id Audra. Shoshana Bean? No thanks.
Well, I can tell you an Audra-led revival (not sure if it was all-black or not) was definitely on Scott Rudin's to-do list. I'm not sorry that he's been ousted from the community and rightfully so, but he was probably the only "big gun" who'd be able to pull some investors for this.
Surprised no one has mentioned Carmen Cusack yet!
Not that she'd be able to sell tickets, but neither would most of the suggestions in this thread.

I am in love with this idea.

Born too soon and started too late.

Now that’s brilliant honestly.
My dream production. The one that keeps me up at night is Heather Headley. I'd kill for it. KILL.
I also wish the Actors Fund would do a Gypsy concert like they did for Funny Girl. Give me Audra doing 'Everything's Coming Up Rose's', Heather doing 'Some People', and Donna doing 'Rose's Turn'. Everybody else can fight it out for the dregs.
A few years ago, someone said they wanted to see Sherie as Rose and it that idea has just stuck with me ever since. I'm fascinated by it.
There is a VERY long list of characters I need to see Sherie play.
Anyone have any insight in what Sherie is working on? I feel like she hasn’t been on stage since her lovely prison play at 2ndstage some years ago, aside from some concert performances.
The last Broadway musical she did was "Women on the Verge" in 2010 and then in 2016 she did "The Front Page". That was the last time I saw her, sadly.
She gave a fantastic comedic performance in John Patrick Shanley's "The Portuguese Kid" at MTC, back in 2017. I also saw her as Gertrude in "Hamlet" Off-Broadway earlier that same year. I never understood the hype around SRS until I saw her perform life. She's a really skilled actor.
I totally forgot about "The Portuguese Kid"! That was hilarious!!
