I was thinking about Gypsy and how, at all times, I want to be able to see it at any give point. And then I thought about whatever the next incarnation will be. The Broadway divas/legends/icons/etc. who have been Rose in the last 20-25 years or so are, arguably, still our main divas/legends/icons/etc.
SOOO! Who on earth will be our next Madame Rose?! I feel like we’re sort of in an in between stage where the women who will play it are still a little too young and the women who should’ve played it are a bit too old.
For example, Sutton Foster talks about wanting to do it. But, she’s currently playing an ingenue LOL. And on the other side, I’ve dreamt of Donna Murphy as Rose, but we’re probably past that. I think Audra is my top choice now.
Who do you all think will be Broadway’s next Rose?
I would like it to be Audra. I already feel I know exactly how Sutton Foster will perform/sing the role, whereas I think Audra who is perhaps an odd choice vocally for the role could completely surprise us in where she takes the role.
An Audra/Brian Stokes/Adrianne Warren GYPSY would be one for the ages.
Most of all someone just get someone to do it, even if Sutton Foster, before Staunton tries again. Maybe like Rose she won’t give up until she is screaming the role on a Broadway stage. I know Sondheim loved her in the role and I’ve grown to appreciate it more recently but enough is enough!
Donna Murphy would have been my top choice but sadly I think too much time has passed for that now and they need a big name to give a reason to mount it yet again.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
The role of Rose is good for an automatic Tony nomination, with a 50% chance of a win. And that’s before the role is cast. The original run with Merman had a run of 750. There have been four Broadway revivals, with the two longest at 450. The last two, in this century, have lost considerable money.
So it takes some brave investors to get behind a new revival. But the demand for the role of Rose by actresses is such that they will continue to revive this.
It’s not one of my favorite Musicals I guess because I find Rose to be annoying. But it is one of our greatest book musicals, with an incredible score. And so many actresses want To play Rose.
God, I would have killed to see Marin Mazzie in the role. She would have sung the hell out of it and she can act so exquisitely.
I think Audra would be impeccable for the same reasons as Mazzie. Glorious acting and singing.
I also think Amy Adams has aged into mother territory and can sing the role with some coaching and would act the hell out of it.
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal
"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello
There are so many roles I wish Marin could have done, including this one! She was so amazingly talented and versatile. That voice could do ANYTHING.

I think a LaChanze/Celia Rose Gooding production is necessary…and throw in Stokes and I’ll spend my whole paycheck.
They really don’t make those brassy, battle-ax actresses the way they used to so I’m hard pressed to think of a good one. Maybe throw Kathryn Hahn in the ring - that seems like an interesting enough choice.
Also, for those who are Audra skeptics, remember how she modulated her voice for Billie Holiday - anything is possible because she’s no mere mortal

Crazy as it sounds, Jessie Mueller would actually be age appropriate now. The real Rose was born in 1890 and Gypsy spans the early 20s to the early 30s (so when Rose is approximately 30 to early 40s). So a 38-year-old like Mueller would be about the perfect age to portray that.
What is it about Jessie Mueller that people think she's right for every single role ever written for a female? Same with Sutton. They're both incredibly talented, but I wouldn't pay to hear either of them sing this particular score. And that's not meant to be nasty, just a point that not every performer is right for every role. See: Sutton's turn as Queenie in Wild Party. Great on paper, glaring miscasting in execution.
An Audra/Stokes/Adrienne revival would be transcendent with the right director and unless there's a fresh approach, there's not much reason to do it otherwise given the financial catastrophe that's faced the two most recent revivals.

It's not a documentary -- it is specifically titled A MUSICAL FABLE.

So because it's a fable it can't be cast age appropriate? I'm not even say it has to be, just that there seems to be this misconception that Rose can only be played by someone 45-50+ when that's not at all the case.
Does Audra’s daughter Zoe sing/act? The LaChanze/Celia pairing has me thinking of other mother/daughter pairings that can play Rose and Gypsy.
In our millions, in our billions, we are most powerful when we stand together. TW4C unwaveringly joins the worldwide masses, for we know our liberation is inseparably bound.

I will never fully recover from that fact that Judy and Liza never did it. It would have been definitive.
