I was wondering if I could ask you a question... I'm currently a college freshman and I'm majoring in technical theatre, and I was wondering what kind of opportunities are out there for those of us who prefer to be behind the scenes instead of on stage (thus my username). I've done all different kinds of tech and I love all of it. But I know nothing about the kind of future it will get me. Is it competitive, or is it easier than acting since everyone wants the spotlight? What kind of pay is there? Any other miscellaneous tips?
This has been my passion since discovering Broadway my sophomore year of high school (the first show my theatre teacher introduced me to was Rent, incidentally) and I know it is what I want to do with my life. But a little fair warning as to what I'm getting myself into would be muchly appreciated. :)
Fredi...you have got to be one of the most helpful people ever. I've been trying to be more accepting of myself, less stressed, and I lost some weight which helped, I just kind of feel better all around. The issue is that I go to an insane private school which I love but which literally gives us 13 year olds 17 year old work loads and subject material, which doesn't help the anti-stress thing.

Heh I may not be bad at that stuff, I wanna be an adolescent psychologist anyway, lord knows I've had enough experiences and such to help and advise and give "wisdom." Here's another I thought of, something totally true I learned the last year...
In society we are very misguided by the concept of love. We forget too easily that there are so many other kinds of love beside romantic love. I thought and learned about this through my bestestest friend ever I met last year, we were only together 6 weeks yet we're still lifelong friends. We're actually at a point where we've decided we're soulmates--neither one of us is gay..we just share such a love and connection that it makes perfect sense for us to be soulmates, just w/o the romantic attraction part which is also too heavily connected w/ the term "soulmate."

See, the degree of dysfunction I can tolerate is the main problem.
It's a video from the press junket for Rent and Adam is making a car noise while Rosario is explaining about trying to not crash her car after she got the part in the movie.

Wanting life but never
knowing how
competitive, yes... but once you're in - you work ALOT longer on one project than most actors...
i'm sure some of the dressers who dressed me at RENT are still there!
most of the work is union on Bway - you'll have to pay your dues both literally and figuratively - but there's much non-union work around... check out ARTSEARCH (I think?) it's a trade mag for techies!!
Whoo-Hoo! Hooray for techies!!! without them we'd be playing naked in the dark!

Ooh if we're hooraying uncredit ppl can we hooray pit orchestras? They deserve so much more credit, they're wonderful!
Actually Wendy I meant to tell you this before, being a pick a little lady must have been fun but when we did it htey totally messed up, skipping a verse or something but whatever happened we realized what they did skipped ahead in our music and no one was the wiser. After that show they thankes us profusely for staying w/ them and saving it, it was the first time the cast gave us that much credit, and I think after doing West Side Story, the credit *really* escalated.

Did you see the "Anne of Green Gables" mini-series when it was on PBS YEARS ago??? They were wonderful! Megan Follows was Anne. I vividly remember having to watch it on a small black and white TV up in my bedroom because the rest of my family was watching the World Series on the "Big TV"...
Ah..the joys of being the artistic one in a sports loving family..LOL!
Thank you so much Fredi. Really, it means so much to me to hear that from someone like yourself. You are so inspiring.
